Dear all, welcome to week 9 Term 3.

Reading Challenges:
Another great
week at Forest Hill College was rounded out with some fantastic news from local
member of parliament Neil Angus. He has been working with the College closely
for a number of years and been instrumental in securing funding for the
refurbishments we so desperately want, to ensure your children are learning in
the best possible facilities. This week Neil announced that he has secured a
further $582,000 for Forest Hill College. We are very excited at the prospect
of doing even more renovations that we originally planned. On behalf of the
College I expressed our sincere gratitude to Neil for the ongoing value he is
adding to Forest Hill College.
The
Performing Arts Carnival was the highlight of this week. The staff and students
participated in a wonderful celebration of performing arts at the College. Our
thanks go to Karly Horton for her wonderful leadership of the event.
R U OK Day
R U OK day was
on Thursday 11 September 2014.
Staff and
students were encouraged to connect with people in their lives and to ask ‘R U
OK?’
Conversation
dialogue was outlined as follows;
1. Ask R U OK? (Genuine interest and concern
shown)
2. Listen without judgement (guide the
conversation with caring questions, don’t rush them)
3. Encourage action (ask them what they are
going to do, suggest where they can get help)
4. Follow up (check in with them a week
later to see if they have taken the step to get help)
Student loved receiving wrist bands, balloons and banana lollies having heard the important message about helping others during home group.
Romeo and Juliet
To conclude their study of Romeo and
Juliet in English, our Year 10 students moved from studying the play on the
page to performing it. Alongside translating their chosen piece, the students
memorised a soliloquy of 20-25 lines and brought those words to life. Some
students took it upon themselves to create a costume or prop to help with their
performance and all of them considered emotion, motivation and how they
interpreted the scene as all good actors do. Highlights included Ethan wearing
a dress as the Nurse (just as Shakespeare intended) and Rachel’s sweet
performance of the famous Balcony Scene.
Australian Mathematics Competition Results
The results of the Australian Mathematics Competition
sponsored by Commonwealth Bank had been sent to FHC last week.
I would like to congratulate the fifty students who took
part in this competition. About two-third of them who participated attained

Library News
Opening Times:
Commencing Monday 15 September 2014 until end of the year we
will be opening at 8am each morning and closing at 4pm M/T/W/F.
The library is open until 5pm on Thursday afternoons for Homework Club.
Reading Challenges:
Participants have been busy selecting materials to meet the various
challenge criteria. We have some amazing readers who read widely across many
genres and collections, and we encourage students to go outside their comfort
zone and discover new authors and styles. New shortlisted CBCA titles have been
added this month.
World Space Week:
The theme for World Space Week 2014 is “Space guiding your way”. This
theme highlights the benefits of satellite navigation to society. A display has
been created to encourage students to think about how much we rely on satellite
navigation in our daily lives.
