Dear all, welcome to week 10 Term 3.
Joshua S - Masterchef in the Making
On Wednesday 17
September 2014, Mrs Tsipos and Mrs Kamvissis attended the Holmesglen VETis-Hospitality
Showcase Dinner held at Zest Restaurant, Holmesglen Waverley Campus. We were
invited to attend this prestigious event, because our Yr 12 student, Joshua
S, is in his final year of Certificate II-Hospitality (Kitchen
Operations).
The course
requirement this year for Joshua and his hospitality peers, was to develop
their skills to culminate in a dinner for invited guests. This incorporated many
hours of work to select the menu; the wines; the restaurant setting. Mrs Tsipos and I were
very impressed by the excellent menu, the superb tastes we experienced and the
first class table service provided by these students.
We were able to
see Joshua in the kitchen busily preparing food, from our table, and were very
proud that he has taken every opportunity to follow his dream, worked very hard
to ensure that he has balanced his school studies and the sometimes, very time
consuming VET Hospitality studies, to attain an additional certificate to his
VCE studies. We were very privileged to share the success with the Simpkins
family on the night and we wish Joshua continued success with his Hospitality
studies and with his upcoming exams.

up their forces and simple machines unit today using leggo to build machines
that incorporate simple machines to work.
Creativity was high & students were able to build
everything from carousels to helicopters!
A fun way to end a very hands-on term in Science!

Royal South Street Competition
On
Monday morning September 1 a group of very excited students met at 8.30 to load
a bus with musical instruments and head off to take part in the Royal South Street
Competitions in Ballarat. This is Victoria's oldest and most respected
eisteddfod and Forest Hill's participation was the culmination of many months
of hard work from instrumental teachers and students alike. The anticipation
was palpable among the oldies and quickly rubbed off on the first timers. A
final run through and we were ready to pack the bus and go. Checks and double
checks made sure nothing was left behind. This routine was repeated on the 2nd
and the 3rd of September as well and at the end of three long days we were
really pumped to find that out of five sections entered, we had placed third
twice and received an honourable mention in the tightly contested Concert Band
section. The stage band also scored very highly and just missed out in
their section. The adjudicators comments
will be our foundations for getting even better in 2015!Congratulations to everyone involved
in this terrific outcome and special thanks to the Ms Morrow and the teachers
who prepared the students for this wonderful experience!
Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival Celebration
Mid- Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival, is celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th month on the lunar calendar each year. This year that was September 8th, so on Wednesday our year 8 Chinese class had a cultural lesson about the festival. They learnt not only the new words related to the festival, but also the legend behind it! Look at their fantastic posters of ‘Change Flies to The Moon’ and ‘Houyi Shoots down the 9 Suns’!
At the end of the lesson, the Year 8s tried all kinds of Chinese food to celebrate both the Mid-Autumn festival and the end of our unit on food. All the students had a taste the main food for the festival – moon cakes. It was a great way to celebrate the students’ hard work this term!
Year 7 Basketball
On Friday last
week, Mr Cutler took the Year 7’s for their basketball round robin. There were
30 students in total, including 4 Year 9 & 10 students to help coach the
teams. The boys “A” team had a tough first round encounter against Blackburn,
but unfortunately went down 22-14. In their second game they held on in a tight
one to down East Doncaster 24-20. This then put us into the consolation final
against Koonung in which again the boys held their nerve to win 19-16. Taban
and Dylan were among the best players for the boys “A” team. As the saying
goes, it’s not about the destination, but the journey, and that’s exactly what
it was about for the boys “B” team. Journey P was on fire for the “B”
team, scoring, defending and rebounding at both ends of the court.
Unfortunately the “B” team didn’t win either of their games, but they fought
hard all day and played a great couple of games of basketball.
The girls “A”
and “B” teams didn’t quite manage to get a win on the board in their respective
games, but did give it a red hot go. As numbers were down for the girls teams
on the day, fatigue became a massive issue and although fighting hard, they
couldn’t quite scrap over the line. The best players for the girls were Erin B
and Siobhan H. Overall, the Year 7s had a good day and I look forward to many
more years coaching these students and look forward to some impressive results
in the years to come. Go Hills!!!!
