Dear all, welcome to week 8 Term 3.

We have had a fantastic week of achievement at the College. Some of that is mentioned in the articles below and some will come in the blog next week. In addition to what is mentioned below we have had some wonderful success at the Royal South Street Music Competitions. Our percussion ensemble achieved 3rd place in their section  and the jazz band although not achieving a place performed very well against some stiff competition. The students have had a great experience and have learnt a lot from seeing and listening to others, and they have come away with 2 Honorable Mentions, and 2 third places out of the five sections they competed in, as well receiving some great feedback. Our thanks and congratulations also go to our Instrumental Teachers Rod and Cameron, and of course our wonderful music leader Cheryl Morrow who has led the program so well. Thanks also to Marianne, Cheryl and Jacki for their support of the program. Official results are available on the Royal South Street website.
We can all look forward to hearing them perform at assembly next Tuesday.
On Thursday this week our College Athletics Team represented the College in an exemplray manner as well. Some highlights being that Sam W achieved 5 first place results and our Year 8 relay team of Holly, Maddie, Steph and Kayleen came first as well. The team achieved many more podium placings, and these results will follow next week.
Parent Teacher interviews were very well attended and the opportunity to receive valuable feedback about how your child can improve their Grade Point Average, as they strive for even better levels of achievement was taken up by many. I am sure this will be of significant advantage to your child across the remainder of the year.

Junior Debaters

Last Monday night our Junior Debate Team; Michaela M, Tiana J, and Tea D, attended the third of four Debaters Association of Victoria Junior Secondary Program Training Nights. The evening began with an inter school debate in which our team argued in the negative against Avilla College, 'That animals should not be used in sport.' This week our speakers were, Michaela, Tiana and Tea in that order.  They argued that animals should continue to be used in horse and dog racing as these industries are regulated and animals are treated humanely, that horses love to run and jump just as human athletes do, and that abolishing horse racing would cost jobs, and that race horses would most likely be destroyed if not for the racing industry.  The outcome was very close with both teams presenting strong cases.  In the end the other team won by only one point.  Next week we debate in the affirmative “That Australia should increase its reliance on solar power.”

Year 9 Maths Games Day
Last Friday, four talented maths students headed down to Williamstown High School to compete in the annual Year 9 Maths Games Day. Jake D, Jared W, Ricky L and Dominic O competed against 53 other schools tackling problem solving challenges, strategy games, relay competitions and Ken Ken games (similar to sodoku). Our boys did a fabulous job and more than held their own against schools such as Scotch College and Melbourne High (in fact Dom O beat a Scotch College student in a game which lost them 10 points- causing them to be knocked out of first place!) A great time was had by all and we look forward to seeing the results soon!

I am very pleased to announce that Jess S from 10B was successful in her application to Melbourne Theatre Company's Youth Scholarship program. The program accepts 25 students from across Victoria to participate in Drama workshops during the first week of the September holidays culminating in a performance on the final day. We look forward to seeing Jess' performance and hearing about the experience on her return.

Accessing Inappropriate Material Online

Teenagers can find a lot of great information online. However occasionally they can also come across content that is inappropriate - or unsuitable - for them. This content may be offensive, and in some cases it can actually be illegal.
Teenagers may come across offensive online material by accident or they may seek it out. To help them manage this situation:
  • Teach your teens that there are ways they can deal with disturbing material. Reassure teens that you will not deny them access to the internet if they report feeling uncomfortable or unsafe when online. This is a very real concern for teens that may stop them from communicating with you openly.
  • Encourage your teen to look out for friends. If they know a friend is accessing content that seems to be impacting on them negatively encourage them to share their concern with their friend and report it to a trusted adult anonymously if necessary.
  • If your teen is exposed to inappropriate content and appears distressed talk with them about it. If necessary seek professional support, including through the Cybersmart Online Helpline at www.cybersmart.gov.au/report.aspx. The Cybersmart Online Helpline provides free, confidential online counselling for children and young people.
