Forest Hill College Student Attends Monash University's Commerce Scholars Day
Last Monday night our Junior Debate Team; Kevin M, Tiana J, Michaela M, Connie F. and Michelle Y., attended the second of four Debaters Association of Victoria Junior Secondary Program Training Nights. The evening began with a demonstration debate by the DAV on the topic 'That all schools should be coeducational'. This was followed by an interschool debate where our team argued in the negative against Avilla College, 'That students should be required to stay in school until the end of year 12. This week our speakers were Tiana, Michaela and Kevin in that order. They argued that forcing students to remain in school after the age of 17 would result in some students becoming disengaged, which would lead to an increase in absenteeism, and in more students behaving in a disruptive manner. This was their first time debating and they did not win the debate, but they did learn a lot about the art of persuasive speech.

MONDAY- OPEN- 9.00am - 5.00pm
This week staff
have been preparing for Parent Teacher Student Interviews. The feedback they
provide is highly valuable and essential for the growth of your child. Research
from the most recognised of Educators in the world, John Hattie, underpins
Forest Hill College’s practice of providing feedback to promote growth.
Feedback to students about effort and performance are the most influential
factors in stimulating learning. It sets expectations and fosters achievement.
I urge all parents and guardians to make bookings with all their teachers.
Students performance as measured against the College Effective Learning
Behaviours, will form much of the platform for that feedback. I look forward to
seeing all parents and guardians at the interviews.
On Tuesday our
Developing Sports Leaders ran basketball clinics for students from Heatherwood
and Vermont Special School. It was an excellent opportunity for the Sports
Leaders students to showcase their leadership, which of course, they did
superbly. On Friday a group of highly talented Maths students traveled across
town to Williamstown to compete in the Maths Games challenges. We look forward
to hearing about their results. Our musicians have been practicing hard for months in preparation for the South Street Festival in Ballarat next week.
This Sunday they are running a big and final rehearsal. We wish them well for
the festival. College Assembly at 9am on Tuesday September 9 promises to be
another great celebration of student achievement, with some wonderful
performances from many of our music students who performed in Ballarat. We
encourage all parents to attend this Assembly. It is followed by a morning tea
with the Principal team.
Following on
from our Art excursion on Wednesday night this week, to the exhibition of the
Italian Masterpieces, we have also seen the Art Gallery in the Theatre Foyer
completed. The art work being displayed is from College students Zena, Courteney,
Cameron, Alex and Jess.
Forest Hill
College is a place that has high expectations of our students, and provides
opportunities for them to shine. These are all fantastic examples of a typical
week at the College.
Forest Hill College Student Attends Monash University's Commerce Scholars Day
Forest Hill
College’s Paul K was among a group of Melbourne high school students who
recently attended Monash University’s Commerce Scholars Day, an exclusive
invitation-only event for high-achieving Year 12 commerce students.
Commerce
Scholars Day is designed to extend talented students by giving them access to
university educators to enhance their VCE studies and familiarise themselves
with university life.
“Commerce
Scholars Day provides students like Paul with a wonderful opportunity to
experience for themselves what it is like to study at Monash University, and in
particular in the Faculty of Business and Economics,” said Professor Colm
Kearney, Dean of the Faculty and Head of the Business School.
Paul was also
invited to attend a Q&A panel with some of the university’s leading academics
in Economics, Banking and Finance and Management, who addressed the issues
around the future of manufacturing in Australia. Due to the panel’s varying
areas of expertise and backgrounds, students were provided with a well-rounded
perspective on the topic, with all experts sharing stories and providing their
insights.
All in all,
Commerce Scholars Day proved to be very successful with all 180 participants
leaving with a real taste of university life and the academics already looking
forward to welcoming them as Monash students next year!

Year 8 AcE
Over the last term Year 8 AcE students
have been working on individual science projects of their own choosing.
Projects such as “What happens to cupcakes if certain ingredients are left
out?” (Charis d), “How can anti-gravity be achieved using magnets?” (Robert R)
and “What is the best position for shooting a basketball?” (Will M) were just
some of the fantastic experiments carried out.
However the best projects were selected
to enter into the Victorian Science Talent Search which is a state-wide
competition for 2 budding young scientists. Five projects were submitted and we
are very proud of the following students and their respective projects:
Zoe H – “Breaking Bridges” (What
construction design makes the strongest bridge?)
Mazen J – “What would life be like
without the sun?”
Lucas D – “The bright side of colour”
(How does the eye perceive light and colour?)
Sofia S – “Wild weather” (How does the
water cycle work?)
Navindu d – “Plain pigments” (How
do pigments create images and colour?)
Judging is taking place at the moment and
we look forward to some great results!

Did you know that:
- Around 360 million people worldwide have a hearing loss, and once your hearing is damaged, it cannot be reversed?
- One in six Australians experience some form of hearing loss, and this number is predicted to increase to one in four by 2050?
- Butterflies are deaf?
This week, eight
of our students have been selling beautiful Butterfly Badges to fund raise
support for the Deafness Foundation of Victoria as part of Hearing Awareness
Week. The students visited Homegroups each morning and also set up a stall at
lunchtime today. Over the past three years, four of our Deaf Facility students
have received a total of $8000 to support them in tertiary studies and we are
pleased to support them in return with the amount raised through the sale of
the Butterfly Badges. If you would like to purchase a Butterfly Badge, please
visit our front office. They will be on sale for $2 each for another weeks.
Remember to
protect your hearing and use the ‘60:60 Rule’. Listen to your music at 60% of

Maths Talent Quest 2014
Our school entered 13 projects in the
Maths Talent Quest. Six entries were from Year 7 STEM (Ms Tsigas’ class) and seven
entries from Year 9 STEM (Mr Heaton’s class). The students worked hard in
groups and individually at home and at school to bring maths alive in the real
world. The Maths Talent Quest aims to promote an interest in mathematics. The
focus is on the process of mathematical investigations and looking at
real life situations and finding that mathematics is everywhere.

National Gallery of Victoria Student Night
On
Wednesday night, Ms Broadbent and myself took a small group of enthusiastic
senior art students to the National Gallery of Victoria’s, first Student Night.
Students
were exposed to life drawing where they were encouraged to participate, with a
tutor walking around offering instructions and advice. Just fantastic!
At
7pm we all went on tour of the current Winter Masterpiece collection of ‘The
Italian Masterpieces’, from Spain. Accompanied by an Auslan interpreter we were
walked through all 7 rooms of the exhibition. The tour was scheduled for 45 minutes,
but then turned into an hour and a half due to such a captivated and engaged
audience. The tour guide just wanted to keep talking and with her wealth of
knowledge, we all felt extremely privileged to hear what she had to say.
After
the tour finished we all went back into the foyer to give live drawing another
go. It was clear the students enjoyed the experience as it come to the end,
gallery staff were packing up around us. Even then our students didn’t get the
hint, they just wanted to finish their drawings!
The
night was a huge success not only for the National Gallery but also for our
students, who all said they couldn’t wait for next year’s Student Night.

Sports Leaders Jump Program
On Tuesday this
week over 50 students from Vermont South Special School visited Forest Hill
College for a Basketball Clinic as part of the ‘Jump’ Program. In conjunction
with Basketball Victoria, students from Forest Hill College and Heatherwood
have worked together in learning new skills this term around coaching, umpiring
and leadership with a focus on Basketball. This initiative is part of the
Developing Sport Leaders Program within Growth. The clinic involved groups of
2-3 students running individual stations for the primary school students and a
friendly game at the conclusion. The teachers from Vermont South commented on
how fantastic the experience was for their students coming into a mainstream
school and also commended on the strong leadership, friendly approach and
organisation of the Forest Hill and Heatherwood students. It was very rewarding
to see the progress and development shown by our Sport Leaders in this setting
and we are very proud of their efforts.
