Dear all,
Welcome back to Another GREAT Week. Some may think we ease our way back into the Term. Not at FHC. We hit the ground running and keep providing amazing opportunities for our students.
As we count the days down towards the final assembly for our wonderful Year 12 cohort, we all begin reflecting on the contribution they have made to our College and how we have contributed to their development as young adults ready to take on the world.
I always say to the students that they should be taking the time out now to reflect on the contribution key staff over the years have made a positive impact on them. They should be encouraged to seek those staff out and acknowledge their efforts.
I like to remind the students that the way they remembered is often on how they exit. It is very important that they now depart the College that has been such a large part of their lives, that they do so with dignity and class.
We would like to invite all parents and family members of the Year 12 class of 2013 to a celebration morning tea in the Staff Lounge immediately following assembly next Thursday 17 October.
Year 12 Practice Exams
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff who gave up their holiday time to supervise and assess these exams. The feedback the students take out of this will be a key element of striving to do their very best through the exam period.
It is critical for all of us to be wary of the pressure we inadvertently can place on young people going through a stressful time. Reminding them that they are aiming for a personal best rather than competing with others, rewarding them for the effort they put in and putting the exams in the right perspective are important things for us as supportive adults around them to remember.
World Federation of Deaf Youth Section Conference
This Friday the Deaf Facility students had an opportunity to attend a workshop with the World Federation of Deaf Youth Section (WFDYS). Some attended as part of an excursion (all day) and others through video-conferencing on site (periods 2 & 3 only). The focus of the workshop was. The students were able to connect with a wide range of hearing impaired students through this process, extending their social network. An interesting fact is that there are 72 million deaf people around the world and only 17% are in education. Max is pictured below leading 80 students through a get- to- know you activity. He was the only student asked to take on this role in recognition of his leadership skills.
Legal Studies Excursion
On Monday this week 21 Year 10 and 11 Legal Studies class visited the courts in Melbourne. They were looking to apply their learning around the justice system into the real life experience of courthouse drama.
College Captain Assembly
On Wednesday this week 13 College Captain applicants from Year 8 and 11 made their speeches to the College. The quality of their presentations and the way in which the student body concentrated on the qualities they were seeking in a College Captain was excellent. Students get an opportunity to assess each candidate with a rubric that guides them in looking for the qualities and capacity of a leader. This removes the potential for students to support a particular candidate on popularity.
Year 9 STEM Humanities Excursion to Deakin Uni
On Friday this week our Year 9 STEM group visited Deakin Uni as part of a collaboration between the University and our STEM Humanities class. Our student s took the tram to the Uni, downloaded the Deakin Uni App and made their way to Lecture Theatre number 10.
Throughout their class time they have been preparing a "one minute thesis" that they presented today in the Lecture Theatre. The thesis was on an idea that emerged from the Industrial Revolution that changed the world, for example, Darwinism, Capitalism, Socialism etc. Some of the students are pictured below working with their 4th year mentors from Deakin University in the tutorial room.
VCE Exam Rules Assembly
Our students taking VCAA exams this year had their final assembly on VCAA rules and procedures this Thursday. Ms Kats took all the students through their final preparations for the exams and now we look forward to the students confidently taking these exams and doing their very best.
