Dear all,

what a GREAT week it was.

Staff Professional Learning Day
On Monday 16 September all staff at Forest Hill College were involved in a Professional Learning Day. The day started with a workshop with the theme "Everyone can learn". During this session all staff tried to learn a new skill, the skill of juggling. Louise and Ben from The Little Devils Circus took us through the basics and lead us to a point where we were gaining confidence in our own abilities. Louise reported that  of all the sessions she has run the FHC staff were by far the most enthusiastic and persistent when it came to learning a new skill. She also said that we had the largest number of successful "new" jugglers by the end of the session.
The session was summed up at the end by Meagan Cook, linking this experience back to the work we do with students in our own classrooms every day. Staff were reminded of the feelings associated with learning, excitement, frustration and joy at mastering something. We reflected on the different levels of assistance required to learn something new with some staff learning quickly and others taking longer and requiring more assistance.

This was then followed by a session where staff explored common genres in writing, this was facilitated by Glen Auld from Deakin University. During this time staff were assessing the quality of the teaching and learning strategies that they are using in relation to literacy across the curriculum and identifying new strategies to incorporate into their programs.
Jillian, Greg, Grace, Rachel, Melissa, Schy and Chris all teaching staff at Forest Hill College ran practical workshops to enhance teaching and learning at FHC. They were focussed on AUSLAN for classroom teachers, the use of interactive whiteboards, Moodle and top tips for a brain friendly, differentiated classroom.
It was a successful day of learning for all staff.

Year 7 Basketball
On Tuesday we had a number of students compete in the interschool basketball competition and I am pleased to report that our girls A team won their pool and then beat Koonung SC in the final. Congratulations to Holly, Chloe, Natasha, Madie, Bec and Jasmine who along with Mrs Fraser will go through to play at the regional level. We wish them well!

Year 12 Pizza
On Thursday of this week our year 12 students were treated to a pizza lunch as part of the celebrations that occur as their final year of Secondary schooling draws to a close. These students will be undertaking practice exams in the holidays to ensure they have every opportunity to prepare effectively for the final exams.

Year 9 STEM Science debate
On Friday morning I had the pleasure of judging the year 9 science debate prepared by the STEM students during their unit of work on immunology/disease. The topic of the debate was "Immunisation should be compulsory for all Australians". Ethan started strong for the affirmative team however in the end it was the negative team that presented the most convincing argument with Jaime receiving the best speaker award. Congratulations to these students and Ms Tsigas for providing this learning experience.

Holidays
As term 3 draws to a close we wish all members of the FHC community a safe and restful break and look forward to seeing you all back, ready and recharged for a busy term 4.
