Dear all, what a GREAT week it was.

College Assembly

On Tuesday this week we celebrated our College value of "Respect" at Assembly. Captains Tiegan and Jaime made a wonderful presentation on respect.
Mr Rogers spoke and the section of his speech that addressed respect is copied in below

"Respect begins with self.
Understanding and being who we really are is a challenging aspect of growing up.
Often we are in conflict with who people expect us to be and who we really are. We need to reconcile that difference and begin behaving in a manner that is truly us. Let your real being shine out.
Respect for others only really comes when we are able to respect ourselves as individuals and understand that we are all different. Celebrating each others differences is a key part of treating each other with respect.

At FHC, every day, every one, matters. Make sure you look out for and show respect to those who may need some support. Be the voice for the person who sometimes is unable to be their own voice. Have the courage to be true to your self and respectful of everyone in our community."

Pictured above is Breanna with her prize, a new Ipad. Breanna is the winner of the competition to design the cover of the 2013 College Magazine. We also presented Maths Game Day certificates. Zoe and Alex from Year 7 spoke about the Maths Game Day very well.
The Impact report was presented by James and Nat, and we celebrated our successful Athletes from the recent District Athletics Carnival.

French Tasting and Culture Immersion

The Year 9 French students were treated to a variety of French delicacies during class time last week, as a conclusion to our unit "Bon Appetit!" on French food and drink. Authentic croissants, pains au chocolat, fresh-cream eclairs, baguettes, mini-toasts, cheeses such as Camembert, Brie, Boursin, La Vache qui Rit and BabyBel - in addition to Nutella, French jams and butter - were on offer to sample. For many students, this was their first time tasting these staples of French cuisine.
The overall reaction was one of awe and appreciation for the opportunity to taste what they had been studying in class. 'Merci beaucoup' to all of the students who attended and made the occasion such a memorable day.

Principal For a Day

This week on Wednesday we had Aiden Hsu, manager of National Australia Bank strategic business visit us as part of the Principal for a day program. Aiden is a past student of FHC. he shadowed our College Principal, Dave Rogers around on his weekly visit to all classes in the morning. After recess he visited a Maths class and Scott, one of our Year 10 students showed him the interest calculator he has been building. Scott was given some feedback about it by Aiden, and he has taken it on board. Aiden has promised to come back and look at the calculator when it is completed.
We rounded out the day by inspecting our old canteen site, which College Chaplain, Ben is restoring and remodeling into Breakfast Club. Aiden has pledged to support this in the form of a donation from the NAB in the future.

R U OK Day

R U OK? Foundation is as a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to encouraging conversations to prevent suicide. They are dedicated to encouraging and enabling all people to regularly and meaningfully ask ‘are you ok?’ of anyone struggling with life.Founded by Gavin Larkin in 2009, whowanted to create a world without suicide after experiencing the suicide death of his father, Barry Larkin.
R U OK?Day is a national day of action on the second Thursday of September (12 September 2013) and reminds people to regularly check in with family and friends.
The R U OK? Foundation works collaboratively with experts in suicide prevention and mental illness, as well as government departments, corporate leaders, teachers, universities, students and community groups.

On Thursday this week the College participated in R U OK Day. All staff had a morning tea provided for them, promotional material was given out to students and staff and we tried hard to check in on someone all day. A message was given to all students at assembly in preparation for the day that "Everyone, everyday" matters. We asked students to stop and say hello to someone they don't normally greet and ask them if they are ok.

FHC Musos participate in Regional Music Workshop

On Wednesday this week, students from across the Eastern Metro area met at Forest Hill College to participate in a combined music workshop. We opened up our superb facilities for this event and enjoyed the wonderful sounds of the talented musos collaborating. A number of our music students and staff participated in this great event and their contributions were of a very high standard, often taking a leadership role amongst their peers from other schools.

Robot Circus

Forest Hill College have been approached by the ABC to trial a new interactive resource on  conjunction with multimedia company Robot Circus, the ABC has developed this interactive resource for Year 7 students about Ancient Rome. Robot Circus has been very keen to trial the prototype of this resource with students in order to determine what works well and what needs refinement. The trial took place at the college this Thursday, period 1 in H7. The students provided excellent feedback and the College is proud of the contribution they made to this National initiative for children.
