Dear all,
welcome to Week 7 of Another GREAT Week. Just to let you know that as of Friday 30 August at 9:00 am, we have had 17,266 page views of our BLOG. We have had 368 parent logins to Compass between Wednesday and Friday of this week, indicating our parent community is accessing Compass. We encourage all parents to regularly access the Compass news feed and to utilise the online absence approval process. The closer you remain to what is going on in your child's education, the more likely you are to monitor, guide and assist their success.
This week as always plenty was happening around the College.
Interim Reports
Interim Reports went live on Wednesday. For the first time these are in the form of a Grade Point Average, available online on Compass. Select the link above to Compass and use your parent login to access the reports. If you have forgotten your login, please contact the General Office for assistance.
Parent Teacher Night
Parents can now access the online booking system via their Compass login. As mentioned earlier, the rewards of staying in touch with your child's education are significant. We look forward to seeing many parents next week on September 5th for Parent Teacher Night.

World Maths Games Day Year 9
Jupinder, Nick ( a fill in from Year 8 at the last minute as Niky was very ill), Petar Matt and Nick from Year 8, accompanied Mr Heaton over to Williamstown High School on Thursday to participate in the World Maths Games Day. The students participated in a number of Maths based challenges and thoroughly enjoyed the day. We await their results with confidence, as the quality of the STEM Maths program is very high. They are regularly providing the students opportunities to extend their skills beyond the classroom. Under the guidance of our Curiculum Leaders, our STEM Maths teachers have been working at pitching their lessons to challenge each individual just beyond their comfort zone. In edu speak, we refer to this as the Zone of Proximal Development. this is a term that explains the optimal level of challenge for a student that most fosters learning. The aim is to establish learning tasks that are designed to extend and challenge within the outer limits of a students capacity.

Course Counselling
This week our Year 9 and 10 students worked with the staff doing course counselling to develop their courses for next year. The process is always challenging for students as they have to make some difficult decisions about their future. We are very pleased to be able to provide the students with access to staff who provide very good advice during this time.
Woodwork Classes in Year 8
On lunchtime this Friday a number of students in Year 8 were busy working with Mr Beveridge completing their "Shoe Shine" boxes for Fathers Day. It was great to see the students and Mr Beveridge's enthusiasm for completing the task working away during their lunch break. A number of these students are pictured below.

Intermediate Sport Round Robin
Our Basketball and teams competed on Wednesday of this week. The students worked hard and represented the College very well. As always it is challenging to compete against larger schools and our students are finding this a bit deflating at times. We are currently in talks with School Sport Victoria to make some changes to the sport division we compete in, so that we are competing against similar size schools. Hopefully we have more news about this next week.

Victorian Institute of Sport and the Developing Sports Leaders
Last Friday our Developing Sports Leaders visited the Victorian Institute of Sport. They were shown around the VIS by Kaila McKnight, Olympic 1500 meter runner. Consistent with our mantra for this program, "Live your dream or live your theme", the students got to explore a whole range of career options linked to sports. They were exposed to sports psychology, nutrition, coaching, biomechanics, media management, exercise physiology and physiotherapy as well as sports administration. They participated in some respiration and strength testing and did a mock press interviewIn 2014, the Year 10 students in the program are accessing early start VCE subjects2015 we are planning to offer the VET course, Sport and Recreation for the current Year 9 Developing Sports Leaders when they transition into the VCE component of the Developing Sports Leaders. We are planning to provide a taster introduction for this in Semester 2 2014, when these students are in the Year 10 DSL program.
On Friday of this week, one of our DSL students in Year 9, Jake, refereed and coached Burwood Heights Primary School Grade 5 & 6 Basketball teams at Nunawading Stadium in their interschool sport. The skills he has developed through the Developing Sports Leaders Program has meant he did a great job, and will be doing the same again next Friday at Knox. Well done Jake.
