Dear all, welcome to Week 6 of Another GREAT Week.

Effective Learning Behaviours

Over recent months we have been developing some new standards around which we will write and structure our reports. We have called them Effective Learning Behaviours. These are behaviours we have identified that are crucial for your child to develop in order to achieve their best.

The Effective Learning Behaviours are:

·         Uses ICT tools ethically and responsibly
·         Uses ICT tools effectively for learning
·         Demonstrates effective problem-solving techniques
·         Makes connections between concepts
·         Is organised and meets deadlines
·         Uses class time effectively for learning
·         Reflects and acts on feedback in order to improve
·         Respects the values and rights of individuals
·         Works effectively in teams
These behaviours will each earn a score based on students capacity to demonstrate them in learning situations. That score will be tabulated into a grade point average and reflected on each interim report.

Year 9 City Experience

On Wednesday this week we had 36 students make their way into the City as part of their Year 9 Growth City Experience program. They had been developing surveys in groups prior to their departure to assist them collect valuable data that will inform their groups projects.

Developing Sports Leaders VIS Excursion

This Friday our Developing Sports Leaders went on excursion to the Victorian Institute of Sport. They looked at elite coaching principles and how elite athletes prepare for their sports.

Free Dress Day Fundraiser

On Thursday this week a group of  students arranged a free dress day to raise funds for the Make A Wish Foundation. Through their efforts, they raised $374. Well done to the student for the initiative they showed.

Maths Challenge Entries

This week we sent our STEM class Maths Challenge entries off for assessment. The students selected some very difficult challenges, including Fibonacci in pineapples, parabolas and angles and measurement. We await their placings with great confidence. Some photos of their entries are below.

Course Counselling

Throughout this week students in Years 10 and 11 have begun their course counselling process. To assist parents and students understand how we arrive at the curriculum grid they see in front of them, please read the following.

To construct our curriculum grid, all students in years 8-11 had the opportunity to submit a preliminary course based on all of the subjects that we could offer (Course Selection website). This information is collected, collated and analysed.

The subsequent data is presented with recommendations from the timetabler to the Principal about what should/should not run.

The Principal (team) then decide on what will run giving consideration to:

  • ·         The number of subjects to be run for the size of the co-hort of students
  • ·         Number of students indicating they want to do a particular subject
  • ·         The number of students indicating that a subject is a ‘reserve choice’
  • ·         Continuation of a course of study
  • ·         Breadth of program

The timetabler then develops the blocks, grouping subjects together in a way that allows a large number of students to access a course of study, again this requires the use of the preliminary subject selection. The blocks are produced, refined and then published to the students.

Whilst all care is taken in the analysis of choice, and all consideration is given it is impossible to meet the needs of every individual hence the importance of course counselling.
Course counselling provides students that are unsure about the subjects they want to do or are unable to access all of the subjects they want to do (because of blocking and or a subject not running) an opportunity to discuss what is available to them. These options may be within the VET offerings or as Distance Education or, in some instances, by negotiation with other schools.
