On Tuesday evening the parent information session for Year 7 families was held in B6. Mr David Cutler reinforced the importance of all students using their planner effectively. The planner is a brilliant organisational tool. Students from Years 7-12 inclusive should all be using their planner. Parents should expect to see entries each day about homework. If you feel your child is not getting homework, as they will often say this, please contact us at the College to discuss. Our staff are providing homework, and it is important students do this to the best of their ability ( not rush it)
As all students in the College should now have a mobile device for learning, we understand this brings some challenges in the home. Here are 8 tips to assist parents set clear, firm and consistent boundaries for effective and safe use of the device for learning.
1. Multi tasking is a myth. Students do homework and study best focusing only on that task as opposed to trying to do homework with the constant disruption of social networking and gaming.
2. Save files to the cloud. Set up a cloud based file saving space such as dropbox. It allows anywhere/ anytime access to files and ensures if you lose your device or memory key, you do not lose your valuable work. Here is a link to dropbox. dropbox
3. Charge phones/ laptops etc overnight in an open space, not the bedroom. If other people send texts of inbox messages during the night, even if you are asleep, these can interrupt a good nights sleep.
4. Have a mutually agreed cut off time and technology free time. Negotiate this and stick to it.
5. Online posts should pass the Grandparent test. If you are about to post something online that your Grand mother would not approve of, then do not do it.
6. Facebook and other social networking sites need to have privacy settings carefully monitored and time on facebook needs to be monitored by parents and limited. In our experience, facebook has not helped one student do better at school.
8. Online friends should only be people you know. Be wary of people online who are not who they claim to be. Make sure you personally know any one you "friend" online.
On Wednesday we had our back up photo session for all students who had missed the photo day last week. Photos are still able to be ordered either online through Compass or via the General Office.
Photos of our Year 12 cohort, International Students, Impact and College Captains will be taken later this term, to align with the arrival of the Year 12 rugby jumpers. The date will be published as soon as it is negotiated with our photographers.
On Wednesday Ms Cook, Ms Cook and Mr Rogers met with our College Captains for breakfast. At this meeting we planned the next assembly agenda. The focus of the assembly will be the College value, Inclusiveness. We also discussed what the captains felt good teaching and learning was. They all expressed very articulate images of how they like to be taught in their classes and what helps them achieve their best within their learning.
Our Year 12 Outdoor Education class went on their first camp for the year. they were focusing on the impact indigenous culture of white settlement of Australia. They went caving and surfing with Mr Webb. The weather was kind to them and the surf on Friday spectacular. Below is a photo of their wonderful Inverloch sunset last night.
On Thursday evening we conducted our Deaf Facility information session. It was a very informative program that covered topics such as VCAA special provision, video conferencing technology, changes to the conveyance allowance, speech pathology support and the daily running of the FHC Deaf Facility. Thanks to all staff who made this a fantastic session for our families.
On Friday, ex students Sagenta and Nick ran a fundraising BBQ at Vermont Sth Bunnings. They are raising money to install a new sound system in our Theatre. We are very appreciative of their efforts. They are also keen to begin doing the same thing fortnightly at the College every Saturday morning to capture the basketball families as they arrive or leave their matches.
College Photos/ Uniform
From Term 2 we will be moving to our new uniform guidelines, and a focus will shift to ensure all students are wearing white socks. The only exception is if girls wish to wear socks with their navy tights. In that case they would wear navy socks to match the tights.
Compass
Photos can be ordered online through Compass. They are on your parent and student Compass home page. Alternatively, if you would prefer not to order and pay online, all students were provided with an order form which simply needs completing and returning to the General Office. The link to compass is below and can be set up on your phone or Ipad.
