Dear all,

welcome back to Another GREAT Week. We trust you had a relaxing break and are now back into the full swing of a new school year.

To assist parents, staff and students with communication and organisation, this year we are introducing a program called Compass. Compass is an online Portal to our timetable, attendance data and daily news.  The portal allows parents access to the daily student bulletin and student timetables and daily attendance data of your child.

Each family listed within our database will be given a unique login for Compass. This login will be sent to families next week. It has become even more critical now that parents keep the College informed of any changes to their personal contact details. Your email address is especially important. Please ensure we have the correct email address at all times and inform us of any changes to it at the General Office.

Our school community will now be provided with a range of facilities that will streamline communication and provide parents with enhanced access to information.

To avoid overwhelming our community with the entire package at the one time, we will be rolling out modules throughout the next 2 years that build on the skills and knowledge of the package you will acquire through ongoing use.

The first 2 modules you will be provided with are the newsfeed and attendance/ timetable information. The newsfeed provides daily messages staff send to students. These messages relate to extra curricular activities such as sport/ drama/excursion/ music/ Tribe events, student leadership arrangements and matters that effect the students directly. They are often the things as parents you miss out on. Parents should be logging in regularly to stay informed. This newsfeed will supplement the weekly BLOG and always provide information in advance of events.
You will also be able to monitor your child’s daily attendance and their timetable schedule.

There is also a link to our Learning Management System, Moodle on your child’s Compass Home Page.

Later this term you will access the Parent/ Teacher/ Student interview bookings through Compass.

We began the year with 2 days of planning for staff. Prior to that our Leadership Team returned on Jan 24 for a planning session. We thank them for that time as it was an important part of mapping out our strategic focus for the year.

Our first day began as it always does with a full College Assembly. The features of that assembly are the official welcome of all our new Year 7 students, the introduction of new staff and the celebration of our wonderful Year 12 High Achievers.

The Year 12 Study Skills Camp was held at Deakin University on Monday and Tuesday Feb 4 & 5.

The camp opened with an address from College Assistant Principal Meagan Cook. Her presentation was an inspiring one that challenged students to be there own personal best. She highlighted the qualities of passion, hard work, focus and persistence as key to their success in VCE.  A link to a video she showed is attached below.

Year 12 students in a Workshop at the Deakin University Study Skills Camp

The Monday consisted of an immersion into Uni life and the culture of a University.Work was done on setting goals for the year, the FHC Learning Culture, developing norms for the use of the Study Centre and finished with a presentation about University from speakers representing Business/ Law, Health Sciences and Engineering at Deakin University.
Monday evening saw the students meet for a game of 10 pin bowling and Laser Tag with their teachers.
On Tuesday a speaker from VCE Help, Daniel Sharp ran 4 sessions for the students. Workshop 1 was about setting goals, motivation and persistence, Workshop 2 focussed on personal health and time management, Workshop 3 developed students awareness and skills on learning to learn and note taking. The final Workshop focussed on SAC and Exam preparation.

On Wednesday this week, all Year 11 and 12 students AND Year 10 students undertaking a VCE subject met in the Theatre for a session  run by Ms Kats, Ms Tsipos and Mr Blowers on VCE rules.

On Friday Year 7 students received their netbooks. There was much excitement about this and we look forward to them using these for some wonderful learning.

Also on Friday we had our second Tribe Assembly. Applicants for the positions of Tribe Captains had previously submitted a written application for the role, and were all given 4 minutes in front of their Tribe to convince students why they would make an effective Tribe leader in 2013. Students then all cast their votes. The successful candidates will be announced next week. Congratulations to all applicants. It takes considerable courage to stand up and tell the student body you want to lead them.
The swimming carnival is fast approaching and teams are being selected. Final tweaks were made to these teams during tribe Assembly. For parents wishing to attend the carnival is on Friday Feb 15 at Monash Aquatic Centre.
