Another GREAT Week-6

Dear all,

welcome to week 6 of Another GREAT Week

Some key dates for all parents to be aware of for next week

Year 9 Maths Exam  19 November

Social Media/ School/ Parents

We live in a world that is now more strongly influenced by social media. This provides challenges for both schools and parents. This week the Herald Sun chose to report quite inaccuratetely on some activities students have been doing online out of school hours. They chose a very sensationalist approach that disregarded many facts. We like to work alongside our parent community to be teaching and reinforcing for our students responsible and respectful online usage. Our student engagement policy states everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect at all times, and our anti-bullying policy extends to students’ use of social media.

Hints
1.      Restrict the use of mobile devices to an open family space as opposed to the privacy of a bedroom.
2.      Set a curfew for the cessation of use of technology each night
3.      Insist you are friends of your children online
4.      Only allow friends that you know - Set all profile options to ‘Friends Only’
5.      Censor the photos your children put online - Choose a photo of yourself that does not have a provocative look, in fact many teens choose a photo that does not show their face
6.      Facebook
·         Do not add anyone you do not know;
·         Do not respond to any messages from Facebookers you don’t know;
·         Don’t include personal details like phone numbers, school, etc.

Signs your child may be the victim of cyber-bullying

1.      Changes in mood or demeanor when an instant message or text message appears.
2.      Avoids talking about school, friends, or what they do online.
3.      Crying, anxiety, moroseness or hostility, especially after using a mobile phone or computer.
4.      School refusal. Makes excuses not to go to school.
5.      Withdrawn from family, friends or usual activities. Changes in eating or sleeping

   Social Media Users are NOT above the law.  This means teenagers too are NOT above the law.

If you feel you may have been the victim of cyber-bullying, REPORT IT. Let the school and/ or the police know.

Dancing With The Stars
On Thursday this week our Year 9 students took part in the annual Dancing with the stars" spectacular. This year we traveled to Blackburn HS and competed against them for the coveted prize. despite being the champions over recent years, we were narrowly defeated this year. the experience was a fantastic one, with many students really thriving with the challenge of performing the Salsa, the Waltz and other dances.

Scholarship Interviews
On Friday this week a number of our 2013 Year 7 students sat for scholarship interviews. According to our panel the students were wonderful and the decisions are going to be very tough.

World Challenge

Today is the pack up day for our international travelers  They are off to Vietnam and Laos tomorrow. The students had a gear check activity today and they are all very excited to be getting on their plane tomorrow morning at 10:25 am. James Webb, our teacher travelling with them will be keeping us informed about their progress and we will report on it in our blog. We are expecting them to be gin their project phase on Thursday next week after acclimatization to the city of Vientiane and Vang Vieng. This is where they will be contributing to the local communities of their hosts. To date for next year we already have 17 students signed up. this is an incredible opportunity and we are thrilled to see it grow even bigger for next year.
