welcome to week 7 of Another GREAT Week.
Some key dates for all parents to be aware of for next week
Parent/ Student/ Teacher interviews Thursday 6 September
South Street Music Competitions Wednesday - Friday 5-7 September
This week we launched our new website. We are very pleased with it and hope it provides our community with great access to all things Forest Hill. If you have any feedback we would love to hear from you.
The Oxfam Concert was held on Monday August 27. Our stage band and brass ensemble performed The Oxfam Festival held at Box Hill Town Hall, is a series of concerts held every year to raise money for Oxfam Charities.The students played really well and their behaviour was exemplary - particularly since there was a lot of carting of equipment to and from the venue as well as setting up and down. Also special thanks to Catherine Bates who stood in to play piano as our piano player was unavailable, and to Cameron who conducted the brass ensemble and played bass for us in the stage band which opened the evening.
We began our week with the first of our course counselling parent/ teacher/ student interviews. These happened across the week, and by the weeks end we had all of our student course selections completed and submitted. This is a huge task and we thank the parents who were able to come and the staff who planned and ran the sessions for making this a successful experience for our students.
Literacy Week speaking
challenges took place on Monday and Thursday this week. In a close contest,
Paul from Year 10 successfully argued against Ben from Year 9 that there is NOT
too much violence on television. Our Year 7 and 8 debate teams argued
the case 'that the Olympics games are not worth the trouble.' Year 7 students,
Genevieve, Jared and James won the debate for the affirmative team against
a lively Year 8 team of James, Jack and Oliver with the debate being expertly
adjudicated by Year 9 student Ben. A great showcase of persuasive and fluent
public speaking!
In Growth classes on Wednesday we had our year 8 students presenting their work from their most recent assignments.
Our year 7 students went back to Blackburn Lake for more work on team building and sustainability.
Our year 10 Growth classes worked on cover letters to support their applications for jobs.
Martial Arts Therapy continued for a select group of students.
On Thursday all students had their interim reports mailed home. The login for Parent/ Student/ Teacher Interview Night is available via our new website.
On Friday we had a lot happening.
Salut, tout le monde! Our French students went to a French screening in the city, and enjoyed the experience of viewing a French film. We trust that their language development and engagement in the subject will be enhanced for the experience.
The Big Day Out was held for year 7 and 8 students. We immersed the girls in the "Butterfly Effect" program with a focus on;
- evaluating
media and social messages and about having the perfect body
- setting
personal boundaries, safe partying, handling inappropriate text messages,
managing conflict and using the internet safely – these skills are all
vital if impressionable and vulnerable young girls are to avoid danger.
- learning
how to manage stress effectively.
- learning
how a reliance on crutches like the consumption of alcohol, drugs
and cigarettes or other unhealthy behaviours are destructive and
wasteful.
- How
do we make friends? Who should we make friends with? How should
friendships be maintained? How do we decide if a friendship is helping or
harming us? This workshop addresses these issues and equips the girls with
the necessary skills to make safe, important decisions about their
friendships.
The boys were fortunate enough to have Danny and John present to them in the morning. Their story is an amazing tale of cycling around the world to raise awareness of child slavery. Our students were taken through a range of presentations and activities to engage their minds in how they too can make a global difference. The session focussed on;
- that
with passion, dedication and vision, everyone has the capacity to make a
difference in this world.
- learning about global issues, our students’ individual roles in the world and strategies to contribute in a purposeful manner to our global community.
Their website is worth a look. Follow the link below.
- The afternoon session for the boys was delivered by FHC staff and focussed on;
·
Resilience,
the qualities needed to ‘bounce back’
·
Images
of adolescence and the characteristics of a ‘real’ adolescent
·
Negative
and positive self talk
·
Self
concept (how we describe our self) and self esteem (how we value our self).
46 Year 9 and 10 students played inter school sport. We had basketball, hockey and table tennis. We look forward to hearing how they went. I managed to visit the basketball. the students had only won one game, but were representing the school well and having fun.
Our new Year 7 parents for 2013 attended a welcome morning tea with our Principal team. The Principals telephoned every familly over the last 2 weeks to welcome them to our College. The focus of the presentation we made for the parents was on our learning culture, the digital learning program and beginning an excellent transition process into FHC. The morning tea was very well attended and we look forward to the next time we see them all for their Literacy and Numeracy testing on Saturday 15 September.
Thanks to the team of staff who made this all happen for our students.
Good luck to Maddy in year 10 with the State swimming trials this weekend. She has qualified for the 100 and 200 Individual Medley and 50 and 200 meter Freestyle and 100 meter Butterfly and Backstroke.
