From Monday to Wednesday our Unit 2 and 4 Outdoor Education students, Shannyn, Dani, Josh, Maddie, Courtney, Daniel, Max, Lochlan, Bec and Tess went to Mt Stirling for their snow camp experience. On the first day they skied with their packs to King Saddle Hut, where they camped for the night. After melting snow for breakfast, they took the Hut Loop Trail to where they built 2 igloos. On their last day they broke camp and returned to their bus along the circuit road. The students had a great time and we thank the staff involved for creating such a fantastic experience.
On Monday we had try outs for the Year 8 Boys basketball team and on Thursday we had try outs for the Year 8 Girls basketball team. On Friday our Year 10 Boys team trained in preparation for their matches next week.
On Tuesday Barry Heard, a Vietnam veteran and author, spoke with our Year 12 English students. He was able to complement the work done in class on the novel "Dear America."
On Wednesday our Year 9 Growth community service continued. Students are working at Burwood Heights PS, Taralye, Strathdon Retirement Village, Alkira and with Heatherwood back at school on the "Jump Project"
Our Year 7 Growth students visited Blackburn Lake to expand on the work they have been doing in class on science, sustainability and working in teams.
During Thursday, a group of Year 9 students and Mr Beveridge completed a sculpture project they had been working on for several months when they concreted into the ground, the school logo they had constructed, largely in their own time at lunch and after school.
The project began with the students projecting the school logo onto a wall and sketching the design. They then set about welding it together and finally painting it. Well done to Stephen in Year 9, in particular for the incredible skill and persistence he has demonstrated as the student who has led the project and made it all happen. The sculpture is pictured below.
This week we celebrated Literacy and Numeracy Week with a host of events. Throughout the week a Library raffle took place. Any student who borrowed a book during Literacy and Numeracy Week went into the raffle draw. There was also a staff film match up quiz, where students were required to match staff with their favourite nominated movies.
On Thursday during periods 2 and 3, we had the 24 game, a complex maths challenge that involves developing an equation with random series of numbers to add up to 24, as quickly as possible. Students from years 7-9 competed and students in years 10-12 acted as proctors for the event.
On Friday we had our Book/ Movie Character Dress Up Day and Book Quiz.Staff and students alike took to the concept and arrived in a glorious array of outfits to promote literacy.
Thanks to all staff who worked very hard to ensure we engaged our students in the key skills of literacy and numeracy throughout this week.
THE REVOLUTION HAS ARRIVED!
The Forest Hill Bolshevik Party, led by Madol Lenin, was
able to win the support of the majority of the students in the year 12
Revolutions class by consistently standing by the demands and the slogans of ‘All
Power to the Students’ and ‘Peace, Bread, Land’.
Today,
Friday 24 August, at 10.46 am the Forest Hill Bolshevik Party took control of
the school by arresting two Principals at the Winter Palace and placing them
under arrest. Ms Jenny Cook, on hearing
the commotion, fled the country (from what our spies in the Cheka told us) but we did manage to arrest both Ms Meagan
Cook and Mr David Rogers. We hope that they will remember their ‘Principal’s
Day’whilst in jail with fond memories.
Ms Katsanavakis, leader of the Provisional Government was
also arrested and locked in the B Block storeroom as she did not fully support
the revolution. Screaming and asking for mercy she was locked up to allow the
proletariat students to decide for themselves whether they come to home group
or not.
The above is a report from our Year 12 History Revolutions class, who immersed themselves in the concept of a revolution for the day. They had great fun and learnt a lot that we are very confident will stand them in good stead for their exam later this year.
