Another GREAT Week- 3

Welcome to week 3 of Another GREAT Week.

On Monday a randomly selected group of students sat a series of tests for the International PISA data collection on educational standards world wide.

Our VCAL class continued the practical application of their recent class project in the garden. They completed their retainer wall and pathway, mulched the garden bed and planted some more indigenous plants. The garden is looking great.
On Tuesday we ran the driver education program "Fit To Drive" for our Year 11 students. This is a forum for students to assist them better understand the risks associated with road use and the statistical chances of young drivers being involved in accidents. The program provides strategies for reducing these risks.

Assembly on Wednesday was outstanding. It focussed on the College value, a safe and secure environment. In a nutshell, this is about creating the right conditions for learning, where everyone feels safe and happy. We had a number of fabulous student presentations on this and on what they have been learning in growth. In particular, we were shown the variety of learning experiences that the Year 9 students are undertaking this term. These include the work towards the World Challenge, the commencement of their community service experiences, the Duke of Edinburgh Award, the city experience and the Salvation Army Door Knock. A Year 10 Growth presentation was also shown and our signing choir performed the song "Butterfly hands, which was absolutely stunning.

A further promotion of the Performing Arts Carnival was conducted. Students are strongly encouraged to support this event by getting involved in performances and wearing Tribe colors on the day.

The assembly was well attended by parents and we enjoyed catching up with many of those parents for morning tea immediately following the conclusion of the full College Assembly. It was at this stage students then broke into year level assemblies for some more year level specific work on the value safe and secure environment.

As part of his fundraising endeavors to support his World Challenge, Paul drew his raffle at assembly and the winner of the IPad 3 was M Pierce. This has been delivered and Paul and his family would like to express their thanks to all members of the community who supported his raffle.

On Wednesday evening our VCE/VCAL information session was held at the College. This was very well attended and provided parents and students the opportunity to better understand the course selection process, the range of subjects and options available and meet the teachers of our Year 10 and VCE subjects.

Jenny Meagan and I went to the EMR Principal Conference on Thursday and Friday and were lucky enough to hear intentionally renowned educators such as Yong Zhao and Carol Tomlinson speak on future directions for education. It is affirming to note that they are our directions. They centre on creating differentiated curriculum, assessment and delivery methods so that each student feels both challenged and engaged in each class. This is something we have been working on very keenly all year, and will continue to do so.

Wellbeing week has been huge marking the London Olympics. Each day we have had telecast of the Games in The Shack and students and staff were encouraged to participate in the Quiz initiated by our library staff. Tuesday lunchtime the mini Olympics were opened by the Queen and students joined in volleyball, relay games and discus variations. Wednesday 240 students purchased sushi, nachos and sausages celebrating international food. Thursday over 200 students had a bumper of a time in bumper and zorb balls along with sumo wrestling. Friday the College decked out in Olympic themed attire and there were many Australian flags to be seen. At lunchtime the focus turned to staff with an afternoon tea to celebrate wellbeing week which also included a farewell to Belinda, our College Chaplain.

This weekend a number of our student leaders are attending a youth leadership camp at Oasis Youth Camp. It is a great commitment from them attending the camp for the weekend and we applaud their desire to develop their skills. We wish them well and look forward to them bringing back some strategies for their teams of leaders.
