Another GREAT Week-2

Welcome to week 2.

Reminder to all Year 9 and 10 students and parents.

Important Evening for Parents of students in Years 9 and 10

The Year 9 and 10 Course Information Evening will be held on Wednesday 1 August from 6:30 pm in the Science Block.

The purpose of this event is to:
  • understand the course requirements for students moving into Year 10 and Year 11 at Forest Hill College;
  • understand the course selection process for students moving into Year 10 and 11; and
  • speak directly with staff  about the subjects being offered and the pathways that they lead to.
Selecting a later years course is a challenging and at times confusing experience. To eliminate these concerns, we have established this event. We encourage all parents and students to attend. Selecting the course that suits each child requires an individual focus and clear, informed decision making. We look forward to seeing you there.

We began the week with our VCAL students landscaping a garden by the Year 8 and 10 locker bays in the Southern Courtyard. The students have been working on a design brief across their curriculum for the last term. they have drawn, costed and quoted on their plans, and this week began putting the plans into action. They have produced some great results. If you are in the College during the coming weeks for the course information evening or any other matter, it is worth checking their work out. A lot of work has gone into developing this area  by the Year 8 and 10 locker bays in the Southern Courtyard  this year.

Staff met in their working parties to continue the delivery of strategic plans around elearning, Growth and Differentiation on Tuesday afternoon and on Wednesday many of our Domain teams met to continue planning for the Year 9 and 10 course information evening next week on Wednesday August 1.

On Tuesday evening we had the Tertiary Information Session conducted at the College. In excess of 115 people attended what was a fantastic source of information around tertiary selections. Thanks to all staff who organised and delivered the event. It takes a lot of coordinating to ensure a broad representation of Universities and TAFEs are present for the event. Thanks to the parents who showed with their attendance how valuable they see this type of event.

On Wednesday approximately 40 students in Year 9 made their way into the City for the commencement of their City experience as part of their "World" Growth program. 20 of the remaining students commenced their Community Service, working with students from Heatherwood Special School and Basketball Victoria to deliver the "Jump" program, as part of their "Community" Growth program. The final 20 students did some pathways work back at the College.

On Wednesday 8 Year 9 students travelled to Penleigh and Essendon Grammar School to participate with 109 teams from over 40 Victorian schools for the Fifteenth Annual Year 8 Mathematics Games Day. This is a maths competition between the schools and our students placed in the top 3rd of schools.

The Martial Arts Therapy program ran on Wednesday for 22 Years 9 and 10 boys·       It is  a Martial Arts, 8 week program offered in Term 3. This program intends to teach boys how to take control of their thoughts, emotions and behaviour. This will positively influence the ways in which the boys deal with their relationships, frustration, anger and stress. The program demonstrates and facilitates the boys’ use of body and mind in order to help impulse control and decision making. The first session emphasized core values of program- be strong, be calm, be kind and try hard.

College Council met on Wednesday. They discussed a range of topics, and are pleased to announce that their will be a parent forum on our College uniform to be held at the college on Thursday the 16th of August from 6:30 to 7:30pm in the Year 7 classroom spaces. Students and staff have been collaborating on the uniform policy, which essentially looks at the way we wear our uniform in relation to make up, facial piercings, nail polish etc. We have also been exploring the type of winter jacket and school shoes that are deemed appropriate. Guidelines have been recomended, and it is now the parents opportunity to influence the directions we are taking.

Professional Learning this Thursday was designed around assessment and feedback. This will be the case for the remainder of this term. Staff worked on developing their understanding of what type of feedback is most effective. This is a complicated topic and much world wide research has been done on it. Factors such as the type and delivery style, timing and directness of the feedback were all looked at. It is becoming clearer that feedback needs to be built around 3 key questions for students to enhance their learning.

Where am I going?
How am I going?
Where to next?

Feedback and assessment have traditionally been about teacher judgements to determine a score. To optimise learning, which is why we are at school of course, feedback and assessment needs to be carefully designed to develop learning.
Our intent is to provide continually improving feedback to our students. With the advent of Windows 8 and Moodle brings the exciting possibility of allowing parents to see the feedback we are providing students online.

Debating season for senior students concluded on Thursday night with a decisive win against Wesley in C Grade and a best speaker award to Ben S. Year 8 students Oliver, Alex and James competing in Year 9 competition had a narrow loss to Avila. Congratulations to all debaters and their families for their commitment this season.  Junior debaters will be in action next term as they take part in  Debating Victoria's training program!

Rhythm Nation ( Performing Arts Carnival) rehearsals continued throughout this week. Tribes have established rehearsal routines and are working at lunch and after school to prepare. Many students worked diligently during their holidays to write scripts, ready for the beginning of rehearsals this term.

As with our other College carnivals, students and staff will wear their tribe colours, instead of the College Uniform.  Points to tribes will be awarded for both individual and team participation in a variety of interactive, art, drama, dance, music and funevents. Additionally, some great prizes will be on offer!

Bell times will remain the same, and the day will have the following structure:

Period 1 & 2:  Rhythm Nation – student performance competition, in the Theatre.
Period 3:  Tribe Amazing Race challenge on our school grounds, lead by Bel and Ben.
Lunch time: Will feature fun and interactive activities, organized by the Arts Domain.
