We began the week with the Tribe Cross Country on Tuesday. Some very notable performances by many of our students had the PE department excited at the prospect of a strong inter school team being developed. It was a perfect day for the run and the overwhelming observation we made is how well the students embrace any Tribe competition.
8C and 8E continued the Year 8 visits to the State Library as part of their Humanities and Literacy focus on Persia. They produced some wonderful Persian comic strips that have been displayed at the school. The State Library staff commented on how well prepared our students were compared to other schools that visit the Library. Well done to our staff and the students on the knowledge they had generated prior to the exhibition.
Year 12 Art students visited the National Gallery to experience the magnificent Fred Williams exhibition. They were also very fortunate to participate in a tutorial with a featured artist at the Gallery. We are sure this will stand them in good stead later in the year and in their lives as young artists.
Momentum is building for the Basketball Marathon, being held on Tuesday 27 May. This even has a very rich history at the school. For the uninitiated, it is a fund raising event, run by the students, named in honor of Geoff Castles ( A PE Teacher at the school), who sadly passed away in the 1970's from Cancer. Funds raised are allocated to the Cancer Council, a local charity of the student's choice and IMPACT.Tribe points are being carefully monitored and at this stage Red are well out in front.
The Premiers Reading Challenge is also progressing very nicely. It is the Blue Tribe who have accumulated the most amount of points to date in this event.
The College Production, "Grate Expectations" is well into rehearsal mode. The students and staff involved are working hard and seem very enthusiastic about the event.
Thursday saw us hold our annual Discovery Evening. It was very well attended, and this is a reflection of our growing reputation amongst our community. The student speakers, Jack and Amelie from Year 7, Joey and Natalie from Years 10 and 9 respectively and Alison and Brendan from Year 12 were wonderful. They spoke of great pride in the school. They demonstrated a clearly well developed public speaking ability. They also spoke of the wide range of opportunities they have enjoyed at FHC. They all clearly have strong aspirations to be successful and work hard to do so. Thanks to all our staff and parents who assisted with the event. these events take a lot of dedication and energy to run well. Our last staff members to leave went home at 9:50pm. It is a long day, but it certainly showcases our wonderful College.
Thanks to Melanie for organising and rehearsing the student speakers and arranging for the advertising board promoting the evening.
Thanks Jill for the fantastic promotion of the night in the Primary Schools.
Thanks to Sue and the Domain leaders for the leadership required around developing the displays in the classrooms.
Thanks Nicky for arranging any physical resources we required.
Thanks to our interpreters for their preparation and interpreting through the presentations.
Thanks to all staff who contributed to the displays and attended the evening.
Thanks to the parents and students who also attended or participated.
We really do appreciate your passion for the school and promoting it in a great light. The feedback we are getting is our reputation is rapidly growing within our community.
This weeks Professional Learning is related to ANZAC day. The link takes you to a site rich in ANZAC information. As we approach this important day on the Australian calendar, it is worth taking a moment to remeber why we do hold that day so sacred on our calendar.
