Dear all, welcome to week 4 Term 3.
This last week has been one of my most memorable ones since I have been at the College. I believe we put on 2 of the best events I have seen since coming here in 2007. The Winter Music Concert and the Course Information Evening this week were both of exceptional standard.
I addressed the staff this morning about the ongoing signs that our College is really beginning to flourish. Our enrolment data looks like we will have grown as the school of first choice quite considerably. I am continually fielding enrolment enquiries and conducting tours of the College.
The Course Information Evening was a standing room only affair. Parents and students were buzzing with the introduction of electives that stimulate students learning and better prepare them for achievement at VCE. The energy from the staff was infectious and we are so thrilled to have such strong interest in the academic pathways for our students from families.
The Winter Concert was clearly the best I have seen in my time here. The quality of the music, the professionalism of the students and the entertainment they provided were all of very high quality and lived up to our high expectations. The food we all enjoyed after the Concert, prepared by our Middle Years Food Tech students was delicious.
Year 9 STEM English
As we have been studying Animal Farm by George Orwell, we have looked at how the ‘truth’ can be manipulated through language and that people (or animals) can be convinced to think and act in a certain way.
Students have been busy creating their own pieces of propaganda based on the text and a lot of effort has been put into posters, speeches and pamphlets designed to convince the animals that “Napoleon is always right” and that “all animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others.”
Will You Be One in 100?
Big Camp can provide you with a once in a lifetime opportunity. Powerhouse runs two camps at Somers each year in January for 200 carefully select participants; Lord Somers Camp for boys and Lady Somers camp for girls. The week long programs provide an array of experiences that are exciting, full on and non-stop. Through a series of totally unique and challenging situations, the Big Camp program is designed to create change by providing scenarios that allow you to question your self-perception, think about your goals and give you the chance to overcome obstacles.
Basketball Marathon 2014
Last week saw the grand success of the 2014 Basketball Marathon – ‘Disney vs Dreamworks’
The students owned this event and we saw cadres forming around the many different aspects of the Marathon to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation.

The camp is open
to young people aged 16 ½ to 18 years of age and the majority of
participants will have completed Year 11 or equivalent. The goal is to bring together
people from a wide variety of backgrounds, locations, schools and industries.
Elite athletes, professionals, celebrities all come along to make the Big Camp
program entertaining and exciting. Last year, the 5 finalists of the Big
Brother house attended the girls camp. Previous guest speakers have included;
Hamish Blake, Eddie McGuire, Jules Lund, Veronica Milsom.
See Mrs McEwen
for more details and how to apply.
Basketball Marathon 2014
Last week saw the grand success of the 2014 Basketball Marathon – ‘Disney vs Dreamworks’
We are regularly
impressed by our students here at Forest Hill College as they throw their support behind noble
ventures to accomplish a common goal.
The students owned this event and we saw cadres forming around the many different aspects of the Marathon to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation.
Congratulations
to Mrs. Axiotis’ Business Classes for organising and staffing the BBM Canteen
for the duration of the 24 hours, we were all very well fed!
This class also
organised the silent auction which continues this week and is raising important
extra money that will have lasting impact on the families effected by
Leukaemia.
(Be watching
compass for the final auction items and your chance to win them.)
Ms. Robinson led
an enthusiastic group of Art students to plan, create and display the ‘Disney
vs DreamWorks’ theme, and bring it to life on the walls and structures of the
gym.
The place looked
fantastic, and continues to build on the efforts of the year before.
Nick Sorich and
the masterful Tech crew constructed a Bieber-worthy lighting and sound set up
that set the vibe of the day and night.
This stage
played host to the FHC Jazz band and Melbourne Pop-Rock group ‘Masketta Fall’.
Lastly I’d like
to congratulate the 180 students who put their hands up to fund raise and the
127 of those that committed to staying the whole night.
Your individual
sponsorships have amassed over $6500 already! Taking our total above $9500 less
expenses. An improvement again on last
year’s sensational effort.
I couldn’t be
prouder of the work that we all put in and what we were able to accomplish as a
group.
The unity
displayed to bring this feat about was powerful and moving.
There are
already murmurs about what the 2015 BBM could involve. I’m very excited to see
where our college community can take this!
