Dear all, welcome to week 10 Term 2.
We would like to wish all of our students, parents/ guardians blog readers and staff, a lovely break. It has been a big term and much has been achieved. The expectations that have been set and the support provided by our staff for our students in order form them to achieve has been wonderful and I thank them for this.
Students will have received their reports on line today, the last day of term. This week at Assembly we focused on the College value of "Responsibility". I spoke to students about their responsibilities. In particular I focused on the feedback they get about their learning. One of our Effective Learning Behaviors is "Reflects and acts on feedback in order to achieve" These reports that you will have all read by now are a prime source of feedback.
I implore all of you to take responsibility for acting on the feedback and putting in place some reflection and goal setting on return to school next term. Set some goals for improvement and put in place strategies for achieving these goals. Determine how you will hold yourself to account for these and how you will measure your success. I would suggest that some targets within you Grade Point Averages would be an excellent vehicle for those goals.
Enjoy reading the Blog and have a safe and wonderful break from scheduled classes.

Debate Team Still On Top
Our A Grade
(Year 11 and 12) debate team is still on top of the Debaters’ Association of
Victoria interschool debate ladder for the Glen Waverley area after their
fourth consecutive win last week. The team was led by Scott F., Paul K., and
Ben S., who argued ‘That at least 40% of cabinet positions should be allocated
to women’. The best speaker in that debate was Ben S. Our C Grade
(Year 10) team also won their debate with Noah d., Jesse d., and Jack B.,
arguing ‘That all citizens should be required to do compulsory environmental
services’. Noah d. was named best speaker in that debate. Our D
grade team also won their debate ‘That the media should not be allowed to
report on the private lives of politicians’ when their opposing team forfeited
the round. Our D grade team, Tea D., Alysha R., and Ayen G., presented
their arguments to the adjudicator who awarded Tea D., the best speaker title.
Well done Forest Hill College Debate team! The next round will take
place on Thursday 24 July 2014.
College Library News
Renovations
During this term break the College Library will be painted and new carpet will be laid.
The Library closed for the last half of this week to enable the space to be prepared for its makeover. The main library area, two small study rooms and library staff workroom will start the new term with a bright and fresh look. We look forward to welcoming our students back into a space which is a valued learning and meeting space within our school community.
Services
The library opening hours are 8.30am – 4.30pm, Monday to Friday, except for Recess when we are closed.
Homework
Club will recommence Week 1 next term, each Thursday afternoon 3.20 – 5pm when
students can take the opportunity to work independently within the library
space, or with support from College staff or Monash University Tutors. All
library services are available during this time.
Students new to the school will require Student ID Cards. The library will be available to take photographs each Wednesday – before school, after school or at recess time.
Reading Challenges are well underway and we encourage all students to participate. If you have not already registered for a challenge call into the library next term and speak with library staff. Our new fiction collection is up to date with the most popular books and we have built a solid Manga and Graphic Novel collection which is proving very popular. If we do not have something we encourage students to place a request for consideration.
Burwood Heights PS Music Performance
We have great expectations of our music program. As they continue preparing for the Royal South Street Competitions next term, on Tuesday afternoon this week, our concert band, stage band, brass ensemble, percussion ensemble, and jazz band braved the cold and wet weather to walk to Burwood Heights Primary School to give a musical performance. They were well received by a very enthusiastic audience of primary school students who became actively involved singing and clapping along to some of the musical items. Everyone performed extremely well and apart from the weather thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The efforts of students and staff to stage this performance were amazing considering that they had to deal with adverse conditions when loading and unloading gear, and travelling to and from the venue. They really did live the saying 'The Show must go on'! Well done on a wonderful achievement.

2014 Wellbeing Week
This
year we focused on positive health. Students enjoyed several activities
promoting positive health including physical exercise and healthy eating.
Monday
we set up a fitness circuit in which students rotated through. Exercise bikes
proved to be popular and we were even privy to an impromptu rap battle from
year 10 boys. The skipping ropes and
hula hoops rekindled fond memories of playing games at primary school and
showed how much physical effort it really takes to keep going. Burpees were a
challenge and students enjoyed taking each other on. Students who successfully
participated were rewarded for their efforts with a wrist band saying; ‘Back
yourself: Just do it’.
Tuesday
staff and students braved the blizzard like conditions and watched the battle
for the 2014 Masterchef crown. Mrs Axiotis and Ben Stephenson took on Mr Cutler
and Mr Blowers. Many and varied ingredients were available and the teams needed
to meet the brief- an original and tasty stirfry. Oh boy, the amount of soy
sauce that went into the dishes nearly blasted Ms Cook and Mrs Kats taste buds
from their mouths. We all enjoyed watching as they chopped, stirred and
embraced the battle. Mrs Axiotis and Ben Stephenson were the proud winners and
not so humbly accepted their trophy. Whilst watching the proceedings, students
loved free tomato soup- 120 cups of hot soup- went very quickly. Many thanks to
all who joined in this event.
Wednesday
staff enjoyed a lunch provided by the wellbeing team with a theme of having a
balance in life. Whilst enjoying some tasty treats, staff were challenged to
ponder on how they have a work-life balance, do they make time to unwind, to
exercise and to rest adequately.
Public Speaking News
On Wednesday
Forest Hill College hosted the Debaters’ Association of Victoria (DAV) Junior
Public Speaking Competition. Over 50 year 7, 8 and 9 students from a
range of schools such as Fintona, St Kevins, Huntingtower, Avila, Brentwood
College and more, came to compete against each other in three rounds of public
speaking competitions. The day began with a one hour public speaking
training session run by the DAV, followed by morning tea, one round of prepared
speeches, lunch, and then two rounds of impromptu speeches. Our School was
represented by Tea D and Alysha R who gave speeches on ‘The Environment’ and
‘World Hunger’ respectively. They then had to compete in two rounds of impromptu
speeches where they were given five minutes to prepare a two minute speech each
on a choice of topics such as ‘If I could invent just one thing…’ and ‘If
money grew on trees…’. The results of the competition are yet to be
announced. It was a terrific opportunity for our students to learn more
about public speaking and to mingle with like-minded students from other
schools.

Amazing Science : Making Lava Lamps
This
week the Year 9 STEM science class made Lava lamps! The students had so much
fun making these and learnt quite a lot of science as a result. Density of
different liquids was the focus. The students shone light under their lava
lamps, switched off the lights and enjoyed the show! Students can make these in
their own home. The following website is very helpful.
Year 7 Celebration of Excellence
The celebration of achievement is a very important element of learning and growing.
During our Year
7 Growth class this week, we were fortunate to have a number of students
presenting to the rest of the year level a piece of work, an assignment or
music piece that they have completed so far this year at Forest Hill College.
All in all there were 17 students who presented something and they all did an
amazing job. It is always hard to present in front of your peers, but our Year
7 students were sensational. As expected, the audience was listening attentively
and had the opportunity to ask questions and make comments on what the students
were presenting. This reinforced the learning that had taken place and helped
other students to learn something new. There was a wide variety of items that
were presented including PowerPoint presentations, music performances,
artworks, textile pieces and Auslan videos.
As a year level
leader, I was so proud of all the students that presented and indeed those that
behaved well in the audience. I look forward to seeing all the work that
students complete next semester.

Year 10 Crime and Punishment
On Friday 30 May, the Year 10 Crime and Punishment students visited the
Melbourne Magistrates’ Court and the Old Melbourne Magistrates’ Court as part of their Court Hierarchy studies.
Students were able to sit in various court rooms at the Melbourne
Magistrates’ Courts in William Street in the city and observe a variety of real
life cases. Cases heard included traffic
offences such as drink driving, exceeding the speed limit, drug related cases,
minor assault, property damage and burglary. Students gained an insightful
look into the functions and role of the court, including court room protocol. After lunch students proceeded to the Old Melbourne Magistrates Court
(now part of the National Trust). Students became active participants
by re-enacting an authentic culpable driving trial, taking on the roles of:
prosecutor, defence counsel, judge, offender, jury, witnesses and even vocal
public gallery members.
Students examined the values and attitudes of the past and present in the real atmosphere of Old Magistrates Court Number One.
At the end of the case students explored justice issues and questioned whether justice was served.A great day was had by all and students came away with a deeper understanding and appreciation of our justice system in Victoria.

Central Australia Camp
On Wednesday
morning, at 6am, we arrived at the College to farewell 45 Year 11/12 students
and 6 brave staff. Despite the cold morning everyone was here on time and the
trip to Central Australia got off to a great start with the bus pulling out at
6:45am.
They headed
straight to Adelaide arriving in the evening to set up camp have some dinner
and get some sleep. They were back up the next morning at 3am (yes that is very
early) to make their way to Coober Pedy where they spent the evening visiting
an underground home and church before settling into their underground
accommodation for the night. Their travels continue today as they head to
Uluru.
Year 7 Girls and Boys Wellbeing Programs
The year 7
girls and boys Wellbeing programs, ‘I AM’ and ’STRENGTH’ wound up for term two
this week with their separate celebration sessions.
The students
were involved in weekly sessions throughout the term to participate in group
discussions and activities. The sessions covered topics of personal
significance and value, relationships, resilience in life, and many others that
we believe will equip these students to flourish and become effective global
citizens.
