Dear all,

welcome to Week 4 of Another GREAT Week

Small School, Big Opportunities, Big Dreams, Big Achievements

National Inclusive Policies Recognised

On Friday last week, Meagan Cook and Carolyn Montague travelled to Sydney to receive an award the College has won.
We have been awarded for "organisational commitment to captioning" by the Deafness Forum Australia. We won this over such organisations as the ABC, for our commitment to captioning.
In 2014, we intend to extend our inclusive policies to an even broader range of practices to ensure everyone at Forest Hill College has equal access to our curriculum. Well done to our fabulous staff for the nationally recognised practices across all Domains in the College.

Year 7 & 8 Maths Incursion

The first of the 'Fun Squared' maths incursions ran this week on Thursday 31 October 2013. All year 7 and 8 Maths students were involved in a fun and interactive workshop where they learnt about algebra, fractions, decimals and percentages with the entertaining mathematician named Russ. He had the Year 8's being construction workers to work out how to lay floor boards in a house using algebra and the Year 7's were using stones to help them figure out fractions. Each Thursday for the next few weeks Russ will be back to take the year 7 and 8 students through more Maths revision and fun activities.

Ghost stories- Year 7 English

They're kooky and they're spooky.... Not the Adams family! It's Year 7, Ms Seymour and Ms O'Neill! Two English groups have been working on ghost stories unit this term. As part of it, Ms Seymour created a present to explain what Halloween is all about, and how decorated skulls form part of the celebrations in some countries. Students decorated their own paper skeleton body parts, then used paper fasteners to join the limbs together. Look out for the display in H1 and H3.

Yr 10 Growth students: Level 1 First Aid Certificate Qualified

The Yr 10 Growth teaching team-Mr Heaton, Mrs Jowsey, Mr Chen and Mrs Kamvissis, have this year incorporated a number of opportunities to enhance the personal growth of our students. Activities have included:

·         Guest speakers about interviewing for jobs, cover letter/resume writing

·         Study skills workshops

·         Team Building sessions

·         Mount Pleasant Road P.S mentor program
In addition to these opportunities, the team wanted the students to complete Year 10 and have a worthwhile certificate for their personal development and to enhance their resumes, hence, the offer to complete the Level 1 First Aid Certificate.

On Wednesday 30th October, 60 Year 10 Growth students participated in intensive, all day training to successfully complete their Level 1 First Aid Certificate. The four trainers from a local business in Forest Hill-First Aid Management and Training Centre P/L- were very engaging and our students now have a certificate that is valid for 3 years, including the CPR component that is valid for 12 months.

Our students were congratulated and praised by the trainers on the day, for being punctual, attentive, actively involved and keen to apply their learned skills on each other. The Yr 10 Growth teaching team, would also like to congratulate our students on being excellent ambassadors for Forest Hill College and for achieving their Level 1 First Aid Certificates. Well done!

Year 8 & 9 Tasmania Camp

This week approximately 62 students from Year 8 and 9 have been touring the historic sites of Tasmania.  They travelled by boat across and return by plane this Friday evening. Today they were visiting the Cadbury factory and the zoo, with the highlight appearing to be a photo opportunity with infant albino tiger cubs. The trip has been a huge success and as the students return today, we will have more details in the BLOG next week.

Deaf Facility Grade 6 Visitors

Yesterday, Forest Hill College hosted the first of three Transition Days for students entering into our Deaf Facility program in 2014. We welcomed the students from Eastwood Primary School and Mount View Primary School. The students enjoyed participating in an 'Amazing Race' to familiarise themselves with our facilities and staff. We played games, made new friends, reunited with old friends and even enjoyed a cuddle with our baby chicks and ducklings from the Science Department who are currently a part of the Year 7 Science Project. The morning concluded with a feast of delicious food provided by Christine, in our school canteen. A fun day had by all and we look forward to the students returning in 3 weeks' time for another great morning!

Our Female Staff Supporting MOVEMBER
During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of millions of moustaches around the world. With their “Mo’s” men raise vital funds and awareness for prostate and testicular cancer and mental health. As an independent global charity, Movember’s vision is to have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health.
5 members of our female staff have decided to take matters into their own hands and support 'MOVEMBER.' Whilst growing their own Moustaches may be almost impossible for these ladies, they've vowed to draw on their own Mo's everyday during the month of November. Their team name is EL OF A MO and any donations for this great charity would be greatly appreciated!!
