Year 8 Annual Maths Games Day
On Monday 29th
July two teams from FHC attended the Annual Maths Games Day at Penleigh
Essendon Grammar. A Maths Games Day is an opportunity for students to develop
their mathematical talents and thinking skills in a setting where maths is
regarded as fun and worthwhile with like-minded students from a diverse range
of schools. It is an ideal way for students to participate in mathematical
activities without the usual class room pressures and is a very effective
vehicle for getting young people interested in maths!
The students involved were from the Year 8
Maths STEM class; Jared, Ricky, Dominic, Alex, Genevieve, Ansul, Jack and Jake.
There were just over one hundred teams represented from fifty or so different
schools, all up over five hundred students. Our students worked extremely hard
solving problems all day but also had a lot of fun doing something they enjoy.

Staff Professional Learning
I would like to make parents aware of 2 dates that impact upon students. Staff have a compulsory Anaphylaxis training session on Tuesday August 27. The students will be finishing early that day. Four shortened sessions will operate on the day.
On Monday September 16, one of the four Professional Learning days for staff will be held. The focus of the day is on differentiation.
Students are not required at school that day.
Deafness Foundation Education Encouragement Award
Each year, the Deafness Foundation offers an Education
Encouragement Award to recognise the effort and level of commitment required
from deaf and hard of hearing students. The Award aims to encourage students in
the pursuit of training and qualifications.
Many of our senior Deaf Facility students applied for the
award this year and, after a rigorous process, Courtney R in Year 12 was
selected to be the recipient of the Secondary Award.
Courtney received the award at the Deafness Foundation AGM
on Thursday 25th July and was congratulated for her contribution to
the community through working with elderly Deaf residents at Regis Lake Park
Residential Aged Care as well as having a clear direction for her further
studies. Courtney’s award of $2000 will assist her to achieve her Certificate
IV in Community Services at Box Hill TAFE next year, so that she can make
progress towards her goal of working in the area of Aged Care.
Well done to all our students who applied and especially to
Courtney for your success! Thank you also, to the Deafness Foundation for
offering this award and for the wonderful support they give to the Deaf and
Hard of Hearing Community.
