Parent Opinion Surveys

On Monday this week a random sample of parents will receive our yearly Parent Opinion Survey. This is one of the ways we collect valuable information about parent satisfaction with the College. We use this data to inform future directions. This year, the first 20 returned will receive a lunch voucher that your children can use at the College canteen. I urge all parents who receive one to return it so that your opinions can be heard and make a difference.

Basketball Marathon

Tuesday and Wednesday saw the running of the annual Basketball marathon. We would like to thank Ben Stephenson our College Chaplain for running this fabulous community event. The funds raised will be donated to the Leukemia Foundation and the Cancer Council. In all we anticipate around $8000 has been raised by the students. The BBM organising committee  have done an excellent job. The rosters, the entertainment, the technical support ( well done to the Techs for their work) and the canteen were all done well. Interestingly this year was the first time miniature ponies had featured as part of the BBM.

The Parents Association did a brilliant job of the canteen. many parents came in to help us out and we really appreciate their support.

The staff who stayed over night deserve a massive thanks. Mr Cutler, Ms Robinson, Ms O'Niell, Ms Gell, Ms Deaizpurua, Ms Hynes, Ben, Mr Webb, Mr Blowers, Ms Seymour deserve enormous thanks as the concept of a night without sleep, listening to loud music and the constant sound of a basketball thumping on the floor are more than most of us could bear.
To the staff who helped organise or supervise but may not have stayed over, the staff who participated in the staff/ students basketball match, we thank you also. Ms Biront, Ms Axiotis, Ms Boras, Ms Katsanevakis, Mr Innes, Ms Kamvissis, Marianne McEwen, Mr Grant, Andrew Mountford and Sagenta Cummings, Ms Domange, Ms Roberts, Matt Innes, Ms Fraser, Mr Heaton, Mr Spokes and Ms Cook. Thank you for your time.

We would like to thank our VCAL class for arranging much of the event. They have been incorporating the fundraising communication  with their personal development competencies they are required to meet as part of their course. They have done a wonderful job sending letters to local businesses and chasing up donations.

This event relies heavily on the contribution of so many of our community. To see our Chaplain, Ben, draw this all together was very pleasing. He did it with a minimum of fuss and consummate professionalism. Ben united the College community to get behind the event, and in the words of the great Liverpool theme song, at Forest Hill College he showed that "you'll never walk alone."

Welcome Back Schy Peterson

This week we welcome back one of our Leading Teachers, Schy Peterson. Across the 2 weeks holiday and the first week of Term 3, Schy was in Europe. She represented the College at the 8th International Drama Educators Association Congress in Paris. Schy was a winner of the Teaching Initiatives Program 2013 and she presented on Innovative Arts Practice through global partnerships. This centered around her work in Theatre Studies in Semester 1, where her students participated in an online excursion, speaking online with the Director of Romeo and Juliet at "The Globe" in London. Bearing in mind these students studied and performed Romeo and Juliet themselves at our Performing Arts Soiree.

Welcome Home Max

Max E, who has been overseas in Rome representing himself and our College at the World Deaf Youth Conference is returning this week. Max is very appreciative of the support and genuine care that he was shown on the free dress and BBQ day that he organized.Max spoke afterwards about the kindness and generosity that was shown by students and staff throughout the day. Staff brought in extra supplies for the BBQ, his ESL class and teacher helped set up the BBQ and drinks area, teachers and Interpreters helped cook, serve and pack up, students bought the food and drinks with enthusiasm and even let Max keep the change, administration staff helped with the counting and security of the money. Max was absolutely blown away with these gestures! Max will be presenting back to us about his trip at our next College Assembly on Friday August 2.

Lockdown Practice Drill

This Thursday we again practiced our lockdown procedures. To avoid unnecessary disruption to curriculum time for students, we did it during Home Group. We can report that the 2 times we have practiced a lockdown this year have demonstrated our staff and students do know what to do in the event of this type of emergency. We also did a practice run of our evacuation drill earlier in the year. Taking the safety of our students and staff seriously is very important to us and we  make no apologies for this. All Victorians would have learnt from the horrific bushfires that being prepared for an emergency is a critical element of staying safe. Hopefully we never have to use these procedures.

Performing Arts Carnival Rehearsals

This week the rehearsals continued. The momentum is certainly building for what we know will be another memorable experience for our students.

Tasmania Camp

Arrangements for the Tasmania Camp are progressing very well. The trip is open to students in Year 8 and 9. Students will travel over to Tasmania by boat and return by plane. They will spend their time over in Tasmania travelling around by coach, seeing some of the magnificent sights of this historic State. A reminder that the next payment is due on Friday 26 July 2013

AUSTRALIAN MATHEMATICS COMPETITION 2013

This week we have been calling for students interested in the 2013 Australian Mathematics Competition on Thursday 1st August 2013.
The competition will take place in room B6 and students will be missing period 1 and 20-30 minutes of period 2 on that day. It is a great opportunity for interested students to take on an additional challenge to test out and refine their Maths skills.
