Full College Assembly Thursday 14 March
VCE Biology and Chemistry Ecolinc Excursion Friday 22 March
Parent/ Teacher/ Student Interviews Tuesday 26 March
Dear all,
We began the week with Breakfast Club on Tuesday morning and it was again pleasing to see a number of students taking up this opportunity. For those who are unaware, it takes place in the Canteen before school on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It costs 50 cents.
We sent our College swim team to Division Swimming. Rachel and Maddy T were both successful on winning through to the next level of inter school swimming and Anthony went ever so close claiming a very hard fought second place.
At lunch on Tuesday, we had a performance on Tuesday lunchtime from the band "Little Creatures" in the ampitheatre. On a very hot day, a small number of students braved the heat to enjoy the music. Thanks to Shaye for arranging them.
Year 7 students had a presentation on Wednesday during Growth that focused on goal setting. They were fortunate enough to have Leanne Jarchow speak to them about her ride on a kick bike ( large scooter)from Parliament House in Canberra to Parliament House in Melbourne. She is aiming to raise money for the Alfred Hospital. At this stage she has raised $50,000. Her articulation of what is required to make an event such as this successful provided inspiration and information for our students on goal setting.
Our full College Assembly on Thursday was as usual a wonderful celebration of student achievement at FHC. Ms Meagan Cook had planned this assembly in collaboration with our College Captains. This is a key element of the Captain's work and they had met several times to arrange the agenda.
We opened with our Percussion Ensemble and followed their song with a well prepared speech from College Captains Cindy and Josh on the College value of inclusiveness.
This was followed by presentation of badges for Library Monitors, Peer Support Leaders, Swimming Age Group Champions, IMPACT Leaders and College Captains.
Natalie and Sam spoke about the role of IMPACT and some of their goals for the year. We then enjoyed a celebration of our World Challenge adventurers from the 2012 Year 9 Growth Program.
Jules Piccinnin from Whitehorse Youth Services spoke to the students about the services they offer.
On Friday lunchtime in the Deaf Facility, Hear Peer, a mentoring and leadership program for Deaf and hard of hearing students was held.Hear Peer is conducted by the group, Hear For You. They provide a mentoring program which gives guidance and support to hearing impaired teens at a vitally important stage of their lives. A positive outlook, career advice and the skills to cope with the challenging adolescent years are given through a series of workshops. Their specially trained mentors are hearing impaired and have a wealth of personal experience to share. Check out their website.
Friday was also the National Day of action against bullying and violence. All staff were asked to have a conversation with students in Home Group today to discuss the College policy on bullying and harassment. FHC has a very strong pro active position on ensuring all students are happy and safe at school.
5 students from our Sports Leaders Program were selected to referee the PPSSA Division Basketball competition at Nunawading Stadium. they did this on Friday. It was a great chance to put into practice some of the skills the students have been learning about in class. From all accounts the students were excellent role models and represented the College very well. Congratulations to Callum, Danyon, Haari, Amber and Dylan. Next week 5 more students will be given an opportunity to referee.
