World Challenge report from James Webb
Well it's Day 11 and we are back in Luang Prabang.
Borrowing an iPad from our expedition leader, we so need to take one next trip!
Its been invaluable! Anyway I thought I would give you a bit of a run down of
our trip so far and send some Photos.
We are now at the "project" phase of our work over here. Three tuk tuks picked us up and took us down to the river. We took
a boat across and was picked up by the elders of the local village we were
going to spend the next 5 days at. It took nearly an hour to make the ten km ride
to this remote village deep in the mountains and jungle. This was to be our
home for the next 5 days and the site of our project.
Our mission was two fold,
first to lay 3.5km of pipe to bring water to village for the first time ever
and second to play and teach the children at the school. We slept on the floor
of two of the class rooms with the bugs, moths and spiders and dirt. Our ditch
had to be 60 cms deep by 30cm wide and we managed to dig about 500m of it in
the time we were there, with the help of the villagers.
Extreme hot weather meant we really only could work early morning and late afternoon. The middle of the day was spent teaching and and playing with the school kids and local children. It was an amazing experience to watch the villages experience their first ever running water and it was celebrated by a massive water fight and an endless stream of villagers showering under it (even in middle of night). I think it was a moment that touched all of our students. Watching the students play and teach the students was also an amazing experience. Our students certainly came out of their shells and fell in love with all the children (who never had seen white people before). A great learning and growing experience for all of them. Leaving the village was certainly a sad moment. The last night the students were treated to a local ritual and were all blessed with safety and good luck for the rest of the trip. the whole village came to participate and watch.
The night culminated in dancing with the villages and our students singing Waltzing Matilda, Kookaburra sits and the national anthem. The project phase will be a highlight and and memory none of us will ever forget.

We are now back in Luang Prabang. Students have showered,
caught up with emails and facebook, and been shopping at the night market for
gifts and souvenirs. This afternoon we head north towards Vietnam. This will be an adventure in itself as it will include a day
travelling on longboat up a river and we have also heard a landslide has
covered the road near the boarder and may have to walk to Vietnam (2-3kms). Next week we will be in Sapa for a five day trek then three days to climb
Fansipan.
