welcome to our second last edition for this Semester.
This week, as always, we had a number of wonderful opportunities for our students.
Congratulations to one of our students, Mina, who submitted a successful application to Melbourne Theatre Company for their Youth Scholarship Program. MTC selects a maximum of 26 students from around the state to participate in the scholarship that runs in the second week of the July school holidays. The focus of the program is to use drama as a driving tool in life determination. Students are encouraged to extend their expressive skills – both physical and vocal – and to contribute effectively as a valued member of a group. MTC employs two specialist drama teachers to work with the secondary students for this week-long course of developmental drama which culminates in a performance on the last day of the program.
Our Leadership Team met on Tuesday after school to finalise the College definition of differentiation. This will be the foundation upon which we build our Professional Learning plans over coming years to further develop our skills to ensure we are reaching all of the students in our classes.
8 Year 7 students were out of the College playing interschool badminton on Tuesday. The boys team won 2 matches and lost 1 and the girls team won 1 match and lost 2.
Wednesday we met with our Impact Leaders to continue the consultation around College uniform. They have been set the challenge of speaking with every student in the College seeking feedback about the position we have arrived at following 2 terms of consultation. When we receive that feedback we will be seeking input from parents. That will take place in Term 3, which will allow me to move it through College Council in Term 4.
The group of Year 9 students participating in the TAFE Taster courses in Beauty and Automotive at Box Hill TAFE, continued travelling to the TAFE on Wednesday to do their study. By all accounts this is a fantastic program and the students are learning a lot.
During Growth on Wednesday our Year 10 students participated in "Keys Please." This is a program designed for 16 year olds who are learning to drive. The message is around responsible use of the road and developing skills to ensure they are safe road users in the future.
Thursday's full College Assembly was excellent. The focus was on our value, Responsibility. There were a number of performances, that highlighted the wonderful array of performing arts students we have. We also heard from World Vision about the need for us all to embrace the 40 hour famine. They threw the College the challenge of raising more money than we did last year. We are sure our students are up for this. A cheque was presented from our Parents Association, to our Wellbeing Team to assist in the running of Breakfast Club.
Year 8 teams competed in Girls AFL (24 students) and Netball (11 students) on Thursday. The students returned to school having had a lot of fun, in very cold and wet conditions, looking for blankets and a dry place to sit.
On Friday at lunch Impact put on yet another spectacular bake sale. Cakes and muffins of a wonderful variety were made by parents, students and staff and sold by our Impact Leaders. The $450 raised will go towards the Tribe performing Arts Festival next Term.
Despite the wet weather, 8 students from Years 8, 9, 11 and 12 took part in the District Cross Country at Yarra Glen Racecourse. Alex in Year 12 came 16th overall, which was our best result. Annalies in Year 8 came 51st, Tiegan in Year 8 came 60th, Mitchell in Year 9 came 20th, Kuda in Year 9 came 31st, Jesse in Year 11 came 35th, Jordan in Year 12 came 49th and Nick in Year 12 came 53rd.
During Science, our Year 8 students continued building their battery operated model cars. I was fortunate enough to spend quite a bit of time in some of these classes and the cars are coming along very well. The learning that takes place about electricity is fantastic. It was great to see students who had finished their cars assisting those who were having difficulty.
This weeks PL session is called "The 100,000 Classroom", from TED Talks. If focuses on what the conditions that students learn best under are and how to create them.
