Dear all, welcome to week 6 Term 2.
Another GREAT
week at the College saw us defeat Wesley in the “A Grade” Debating competitions
on Thursday night. It must be said we have always had a very strong debating
profile at Forest Hill College. However, this year especially we have grown and
gone from strength to strength. A core group of young and new debaters has been
established. Ms Romanis and Ms Zemkalnis have done an outstanding job and we
are thrilled with the results.
Our Intermediate
netball teams both made Grand Finals in superb fashion, remaining undefeated
throughout the group stage. To be defeated narrowly in both Grand Finals was
disappointing, but none the less, it was a very successful day. We may be
smaller in size than many of our competitors, but we always compete with great
determination and achieve great outcomes.
I am looking
forward to the world premiere of “Bad Reputation”, our College production next
week. It was wonderful to see the College represented on the front page of the
Leader this week. Our expectations of our students are always set very high,
but this has exceeded what any school can reasonably expect of it’s student
body. To have written, cast and directed the entire show, as Year 11 students,
is an exceptional achievement. I congratulate Ms Peterson on having the belief
in her students to foster this. I congratulate Nat and Jason on an incredible
achievement. I urge all members of our community to get behind our students and
fill the Theatre this coming week. I am incredibly proud of all students and
staff who are involved in the world premiere of “Bad Reputation.”
On Friday we
celebrated IDAHOT Day. The College has a very proud tradition of inclusiveness.
It was pleasing to see the support that our community gave to the event. Many
staff and students enjoyed the entertainment and food associated with the
event. I was very proud of the leadership and the courage many in our community
demonstrated to make the day such a success.
Intermediate Girls Netball
The intermediate
A and B netball teams competed in the interschool competition on Wednesday at
Maroondah Indoor Sports Centre.
The A team won
all the games in their pool and made it to the final. Highlights included
Jaime’s expert shooting (32 goals in one game!), accompanied by sound effects,
and Tiegan’s fierce defending. Unfortunately they lost the final to Koonung by
only one point.
The B team also
made it to their final but were pipped at the post by Box Hill High by three
goals. Jess and Aileen kept the goals coming.
The girls showed
true sportsmanship and class in their playing. Despite the smell of Deep Heat
pervading the bus on the way home (rather offensive to the noses of Ms
Veljanovski and Ms Seymour), a great day was had by all.
IDAHOT Day
This Friday we celebrated INTERNATIONAL DAY AGAINST HOMOPHOBIA and TRANSPHOBIA.
This year's theme was FREE TO BE ME...
Throughout the day there was a number of ways for all members of our school community to show their support and have fun at the same time including: a karaoke competition, face painting and cupcakes and sweets for sale...
There was also a competition for the best alternative phrase to "that's so gay!"... which had prizes up for grabs.
Why are we doing this? Studies have shown that on average 75% of young people who are same-sex attracted and/or gender diverse have faced bullying and that 80% of that bullying occurs at school. Also, on average, studies have reported that between 8-11% of all people are same-sex attracted...
We want all members of our school community to feel free to be who they really are and not have to hide. So this year we want everyone to be aware of the impact that their words and attitude can have on other members of our community.

Hercules
On Tuesday night the VCE Theatre Studies class performed their interpretation of ‘Hercules’. The intimate performance with around 50 audience members was very well received. The students who completed the performance as part of their assessment should be commended on their contribution to its success both through their acting and the application of various stagecrafts.
Year 12 Formal Dinner Dance
The Year 12 Formal Dinner Dance will be held on Thursday 16 October at Leonda (By the Yarra) from 6:30pm - 11:00pm. The cost is $105 per person all inclusive of dinner, soft drinks and entertainment. Please see the General Office for further details, permission form and payment plan details. Students' initial deposit of $30 and permission form are required by Friday 25 June 2014.
Debating News
On Thursday night the Forest Hill Debating team competed in round three
of the Debater’s Association of Victoria inter-school debating championships at
Wesley College. Our A Grade Team (Years 11-12), which consisted of
Samantha W., Paul K., Ben S., and Scott F. as Chairperson, won their debate
against Wesley and remain undefeated! They debated in the
affirmative “That the government should provide financial rewards for people
who look after their elderly members.” Our C Grade team (Years 9-10),
which consisted of Noah d., James, B., and Jack, B., performed very well
against a very strong team debating in the negative “That music and art should
be compulsory subjects until Year 11”, but they lost the round by only one
point. Our D Grade (Years 8-9) team – Jesse, d., Ayen, G and Tea D..
showed much improvement in their manner (style) and matter
(content) since round 2, but they too lost this round by four points debating
in the negative “That we should require all social networks to offer parents
full access to their children’s accounts.” Round 4 will take place on Thursday
31 July 2014.
