Another GREAT Week-6

Calendar Dates for Term 2

GAT Wednesday 12 June
Report Writing Day Friday 14 June
Final day Semester 2 Friday 28 June

Dear all, welcome to Week 6 of Another GREAT Week,

Practice GAT

On Monday this week all students doing a Unit 3 and 4 subject this year sat the practice GAT. We have simulated the experience as mush as we can for our students in order to prepare them for the real thing.

Year 11 Study Skills Session

On Wednesday this week our Year 11 students continued their work on developing effective study habits and learning how best to prepare for exams

Year 10 Peer Mentoring at Mt Pleasant Road Primary School

10 FHC Year 10 students continued their work mentoring some  Primary School students from Mt Pleasant Road Primary School. Whilst the Primary School is rightfully very grateful for the work our students are doing, the volunteer work is an outstanding learning opportunity for our students. They will mentor their Primary buddies for the remainder of the year. They are learning a lot about themselves and the benefits of volunteering for the community. When i speak with our Year 10 students about the experience they express powerful positive emotions about the sense of worth and achievement they are feeling doing this work.

Year 9 Growth- Community Service and City Experience

This week our Year 9 students were administering their surveys in the city. They looked brilliant as they eagerly made their way into the City, proudly representing their school in their well presented uniforms. We are very impressed with the work they are doing and the manner in which they are conducting themselves as proud members of the College. The quality of the group work, the development of collaboration, independence and research skills is quite evident when we talk with the students about their work.

"Wait For It"

On Thursday night the College was treated to a magnificent Performing Arts Soiree, "Wait For It". After thoroughly enjoying the entire show I began reflecting on why it was so good. My conclusion was quite simple. It was an example of "ordinary" kids doing extra ordinary things. Whilst there can be no doubt that many of the acts included highly talented individuals, so to did many of the acts include kids who just got in and stepped outside their comfort zone to give it a go.
The staff who led this, who had worked with the students as part of their curriculum, had inspired the students to try something that they may not have initially believed possible. This is truly great teaching and learning. It was evident that a culture of high expectations and challenging each individual at their own individual level was a key component of this teaching. This is differentiation in action. The students had clearly progressed from their original entry point of achievement at the commencement of this semester, to a point way further advanced than they would have dreamt possible. For that reason, this was a stunning performance. Well done to all involved.

VCE History Excursion to NGV

On Friday our VCE History class went to the NGV to extend their understanding of the History course. Making learning "real" is a powerful way of deepening students understanding, and our excursions are all aimed at extending learning and adding meaning to classroom experiences.
