This week, as always was another GREAT week.
We began proceedings with our Year 10 and 11 English exams. These exams have progressed well. The students have shown a pleasing level of commitment to the process. The experience is a rich learning one and a key element of developing the skills to successfully navigate the VCAA exams at the end of Year 12.
For students participating in VCAA exams next week, the following tips are very useful.
• Manage your revision & studying - continue to follow a revision timetable that suits you
• Eat properly - especially breakfast. Michael Carr-Gregg tells us that recent studies show adolescents are 30% less cognitive if they don’t eat breakfast.
• Good sleep is vital - teenagers need at least 9 hours sleep per night to function optimally. Facebook is a good thing to postpone during exam time.(Actually Facebook is worth cancelling, period)
• Resist comparisons – set your own goals. All we expect is that you challenge yourself and work hard to achieve your personal best.
• Be organised - pack your bag the night before each exam – pens, pencils, eraser, etc
• Get support – you can always find help when you need it – talk to parents, teachers, mentor, counsellor, or friends.
Tuesday saw our boys football team participate in the Year 8 winter sport round robin. It would be fair to say that like the GWS, we have some room for improvement, and we can only hope our draft picks turn out to show as much promise as the Navy Blues.......
More moodle Professional Learning took place. This week we all learnt how to assess on line and upload assignments for assessing on line.
We would expect to see an increase in the number of assignments accessible on Moodle now. By years end, an assessment schedule will be posted for all subjects, and our PL on Tuesday was a significant step in that direction. Staff now have the skills to do this. Given some practice in coming weeks, it will not be long before we are all using Moodle in a far greater capacity.

On Tuesday we took possession of some second hand furniture from Monash Uni for the Study Centre and the open space in H Block. This means we are now able to provide an even more enhanced room for our Year 11 and 12 students to do private study in. We are working to arrange painting of the Study Centre with funds raised by the Basketball Marathon. This should take place over the mid year break.
There was great excitement around the transit of Venus on Wednesday. A telescope was set up in one of our courtyards for students and staff to view the rare event. This is a great way of engaging us all in the wonder of Science.
On Wednesday all Year 9 Growth students participated in the
first of two Commonwealth Bank Foundation ‘SmartStart’ sessions. This 2 ½ hour
session provided an interactive, engaging and fun learning experience at a time
when money is starting to play a big part in their lives. Students learnt about
their rights and responsibilities in the workplace in regards to earning money
and how to budget their earnings in order to reach a savings goal.
The new locker bay for our year 10 and 8 students has now been made ready for use. This will involve some year 10 students temporarily re locating next week as we continue to re furbish these areas.
Thursday was the State-wide strike day for the AEU. We were able to continue with our exam program for Years 10 and 11 and our Year 7 classes. Improving conditions across the entire system for educators, in order to deliver continually improved outcomes for students, can only be a good thing. We hope the new agreement negotiations can progress towards a mutually acceptable situation soon.
Grate Expectations opened and closed this week. Thanks to all staff and students who have worked so long and hard on this production. It takes a diverse, hard working team to put on a show that provides opportunities for students across all year levels. I saw the second half of the show on Thursday night and enjoyed the entertainment. It was clear by the way the audience responded that they too had enjoyed the performance. Well done and thanks to all involved.
